Yet another unnamed official quoted in the report said the President “thinks a better relationship with Russia is good for the U.S., and he really believes he can deliver it.”
The official also said Trump wants to prove he can achieve such a relationship.
The autocrats of old had this all worked out. Putin sends his oldest daughter over to marry your oldest son, and you send your oldest daughter to marry…Putin hasn’t admitted to any sons, so I guess he’d be marrying Ivanka.

Trump undoubtedly thinks it’s good for Trump and anything that’s good for Trump is by definition good for the US. Now there’s nothing wrong with better relatioships with all nations, but arguably Russia is a rogue nation whose leaders are dismissive of western democracy and it’s traditions. Keep up the sanctions, make Putin and his cronies lives hell and then seek better relations when they decide that contrition is a better strategy.

It’s one more piece of evidence on the teetering pile that he doesn’t understand reality the way normies do. His view of the world is highly dependent on the media and on what he wishes. If he wishes that Putin doesn’t know a thing, and that thing isn’t being bruited about in the media, he sighs gratefully and assumes there’s no way Putin can know about it. All the daily classified briefings in the world couldn’t drive through his two-inch-thick skull that there is a world outside that skull where things happen he doesn’t know about and wouldn’t like if he did, and it’s all independent of what he knows or wishes.
