My first read of the headline was “NASA planning to use Rove” to make oxygen on Mars and I had mixed feelings about his skill and then contaminating Mars with such detritus.

I’ll bet the plan is to use photosynthesis, say with algae, the same way Nature produces O2 for the last 3 billion years on Earth. A boring alternative is electrolysis of water.
