Discussion: NAACP: Investigate GOP Lawmaker Whose Facebook Post Tied Obama To ISIL

Discussion for article #234558

What I’d like to know: Where the hell are the Democrats in Maine and why aren’t they speaking out against racism and demanding Willette resigns!

The Republicans are going to do nothing about racism and inequality. If the Dems don’t start showing up, then what do we need them for?

You may have answered your own question: Dems are weak, spineless and feckless.

And I certainly would not call a post from an elected official calling the president a member of Islamic State “inappropriate.” It’s slander.

I hate these putrid fucks.

What’s the deal with Maine, anyway? I used to think the old Dana Carvey/Stephen Colbert skit “Skinheads from Maine” was just random. Apparently, that’s a real thing.

As odious as it is, this statement falls under free speech protection. I don’t know about Maine’s constitution but it would surprised me if if didn have a US Constitution Article 1, Sec. 6 clause that protects legislators when making statements when in office.

“”“A Senate Republican spokeswoman says Democrats are playing politics”""

Football players play football and politicians play politics. But can we talk? Can we all agree not to use crap junk buillshit phrases like “playing politics”, “playing the race card” or “politically correct”? They’re are so lame…so trite and so meaningless. You use them when you have nothing to say…nothing of value to add. So just STFU and say nothing…the quiet way.

GOP idiot says stupid stuff…pisses everyone off. next day the GOP idiot says what he said was inappropriate but by then anyone who matters or could do something to actually fix this has forgotten the whole matter. And so it goes. Soil, wash, rinse, repeat cycle.

Saying stupid stuff is a GOP value.

‘A Senate Republican spokeswoman says Democrats are playing politics and the Senate president doesn’t believe a meeting would be productive with them present.’

Christ; this bastard is a fucking racist shitheel, but there’s nothing the fucking GOP will do about it?

Mission Accomplished.

Free speech does not preclude slander.

They have called him everything else - n o surprise here. Stuipid people saying stupid things

I agree. As odious as it is…opening his mouth to say something stupid is a Constitutional right. Is it offensive, yes. Could it be slander? Maybe. I believe the slander issue depends on ‘malice with intent’. Once you become a public figure, you’re wide open for people saying things about you.

I do agree with the comments about Dems stepping up to the plate and getting in people’s faces. Trying to avoid confrontation makes one’s backbone weak. You need to exercise it from time to time keep it strong. Just saying.

for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place.

Emphasis supplied.

Why not? All the other liberal groups oppose freedom of speech, so why not the NAACP?

This “slander” may be protected speech under Maine’s Constitution for state legislators. Writing that the POTUS is a member of ISIL is exactly the kind of speech that is protected, political speech.

Wanting to talk is opposing freedom of speech? (By the way, slander is not protected under free speech.)

Cite the relevant portion of the Maine Constitution. I rather doubt is protects speech outside of the legislative chamber.
