Discussion for article #229113
What an absolutely slimy move by the GOP. They’re 100% behind this. Assholes.
“Concerned” in this context almost always means racist.
See Sam Alito’s membership in the “Concerned Alumni of Princeton” as an example. They were concerned about non-whites being admitted to the university.
How, exactly, is this Pro Hagen? I see it the other way…calling out the opportunity to impeach.
Besides, if it really was intended to be pro Hagen would it have it’s distribution started in a Southern Baptist church?
The “CCC” sounds an awful lot like the “KKK.”
It’s probably their grade school affiliate.
“I think it’s unfortunate to use this kind of emotion as a means to getting people out to vote. It’s bad information,” Cumberland County Republican Party Chairwoman Linda Devore said.
Oh please. Like members of the GOP don’t engage in using “this kind of emotion” when running ads against the Democrats. Spare me the sanctimonious bullshit.
That said, I don’t care for using these types of imagery. It’s bad form. I don’t know or care who this group is, it’s tacky.
But they are right; if the Dems lose the Senate, GOP will move to impeach.
…and the GOP will forever be known as the party who impeaches for no good reason other than they can.
Seriously. Just read it literally: exclamation point celebrating Hagan not winning…exclamation point celebrating impeachment beginning…lynching pictures to show their racist intent. Boom.
However, that church appears to be a predominantly black church, so who fucking knows.
$10 says nobody from this outside group comes out from under their rock to take credit and explain themselves.
Same type of ad worked for Jesse Helms. Doubtful if it will work now. The demographics in North Carolina have changed.
They may have just graduated.
kkkarl rove
I went to the church’s web site – the pictures there make it pretty clear this is a black church, so pro-Hagan flyers would have made sense, if that’s actually what they were. But yeah, I’m wondering if the purpose wasn’t actually to anger African-Americans over the use of lynching images and try to turn them against Hagan. I don’t think that is going to work.
Post hoc: And apparently this story appeared in the Daily Caller, which in itself is suspicious.
You noticed that, too, huh?
lYnChINg is TOO gOOD for OhBUMMer. HE sHOUld be VIGOROUSLy SUEd fOR of USING hiS ExeCUtive Powers. AmeriCA CANNOt staND bY wHILE oHBUMmer is ActiNG all PResidentIAL and STUFF. SUE OHBUMMEr!!!1!!!one!!!1!!!
I assume you have proof of that.
The whole thing reeks of reverse psychology to me. Plus the thought of a black church being associated in any way with images of a lynching? Way over the top!
This flyer was in no way meant to support Hagen.
It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out in the black community though. And it would not be the first time that ignorant GOTPers have done that which shoots them in the foot.
Let the Republican Dirty Tricks commence now that there is not enough time before the election to track down who is doing it.
More proof that we are winning.
Lee Atwater tactics still live. Lousy
Hmmm. Googling “Concerned Citizens of Cumberland County” turns up mostly just articles about this flyer, but Google does have an image of a newspaper article in the Wilmington Morning Star dated June 30, 1995 and datelined “Fayetteville,” but that’s so long ago that I rather doubt it’s the same group.
Post hoc: OK a little more about this group from another article from the 1990s, this one from the fayobserver.com web site and dated July 6, 1996. It’s about candidates for the Cumberland County Board of Education, one of whom was Rev. Curtis Worthy of 6320 Lynette Circle, and it ties him to the issue referenced in the 1995 article. From the article:
Worthy, 48, helped organize Concerned Citizens of Cumberland County, a group that opposed the school board’s decision to reject Dallas Freeman for principal at Seventy-First High School. Members of the group said Freeman, principal of Fairmont High School in Robeson County, was turned down for the Seventy-First job because he is black.
OK, TPM, if you want an investigative reporting assignment, see if you can contact this guy and see what he has to say about this flyer. Is it actually his group that is behind it, or is someone just trying to make it look that way?

No contact information on that page. But some enterprising reporter needs to try to find him and ask about this flyer, and find out whether this is perhaps a false flag operation.
