Discussion for article #245004
And to think, Chris Christie almost decided to keep on campaigning in NH with what is now hitting the NJ shore. He gets no kudos from me for choosing a last minute change of plans. He’s truly as craven as they come.
Stay warm East-coasters; stay safe and stay indoors. Now’s the time to hang out in your jammies, wool socks, slippers and read a good book. Or, check out some Netflix if you still have power. If not, you’re probably not reading this anyway.
It is hard to feel sympathy for anyone stranded. it is not like this is a surprise or anything. For days, folks were told DO NOT TRAVEL in those states. When you have 10-20 inches ready to fall, you have to be incredibly dense to try to outwit Mummy Nature.
In spite of dire warnings about the power and intensity of the storm, there are instances where people must travel, and I’m thinking they would mostly have to do with family emergencies or a death in the family or bringing aid to an elderly family member, and similar situations.
Coming from a northern state, I feel sympathy for many of those folks stranded. Interstate truck drivers, who are forced to work for large employers during these snow events, are often the same folks that stock the empty shelves in local stores needed by home-bound folks. There are medical emergencies, women going into labor, coming to the rescue of someone stranded during snowstorms as well (good samaritans), and folks that have horrible bosses that insist on forcing folks to work during these times or risk losing their jobs. Believe it or not, that last thing happens quite a bit from my experience.
For those that had a choice to stay home or venture out…that’s perhaps another story. That’s just poor judgement in those cases. Still, no one deserves to be stuck on the highway freezing to death for long hours. That’s just brutal. Even emergency vehicles get stuck sometimes, and people are often forced to walk home or to shelter in place when mass transit closes down.
The best you can say for all this happening is that at least its happening on the weekend. That helps.
Photos of Evil, Tyrannical Socialist Programs that are destroying out country.
So Christie has declared a state of emergency in NJ. Obama ought to ask for another hug as his price for granting federal aid.
I’m one of the hunkered ones. Mercifully the power’s still on around here. They’ve been plowing the roads but nobody’s on them, because there’s a ton of snow on the ground already and more falling. It’s cold and windy and there’s just not much point in trying to dig out yet. Just a day to goof off, drink coffee, chatter on the intertubes, work on indoor stuff, wonder how you’re going to make the money to finally fix the roof, all that.
There certainly are people who’re forced to go out in bad weather, and they have my sympathy. It’s difficult and dangerous to get around in. The ones I don’t pity are the fools who think an SUV grants you a form of superpower that renders snow unslippery and you can blithely go zooming around in two feet of the stuff.
He should ask for a lot more than a hug after all the trash Christie’s talked.
Yes, but another hug would certainly put the nail in his already dead campaign.
Many people’s jobs involve having to travel. People working in hospitals is a good example. You can’t just have no one show up at a hospital, nor can you just leave in the middle of your shift becasue it is snowing.
Yes, people out “joy riding” and trying to show they can drive through anything, I have no pity for those idiots. But a lot of people out there are out there due to work and other legit reasons.
OMFG, I’m watching Christie on cable try to revitalize his dying campaign with his sudden concern for NJ residents by doing the perfunctory responsibility of alerting the public of the dangers of the storm. He’s really not half as good as I just saw with DeBlasio’s direct response on snowstorm preparedness.
Meanwhile, he’s also going off with his typical belligerence, even during his announcements…something to do with lawyers, the boardwalk and what-not. What a POS this guy is, even when he’s there supposedly to calm the public and be on top of things, he finds time to insult people he doesn’t like. He even goes off on the Feds, for no good reason, in preparation for this snow event. You can see him preparing for who to blame already if things go south for him when this is over. Can’t wait till he needs the Feds help and see how he’ll come hat in hand begging for their assist. My guess is, it’ll be just another chapter in Doughboy’s pimping for the cameras railing against the evil Obama administration. He’s running for President for Pete’s sake…
Has Christie even managed to complete his responsibility to those affected by Sandy a couple of years ago? Doubt it.
With an increase of weather related events that can strand people like those on the turnpike, I’m pretty sure delivery drones will be a successful industry real soon!
In the DC suburb where I live, nothing is moving. It’s eerily quiet. No plows, no cars, not even the sounds of people trying to dig out. It’s cold and windy and only about half the expected 2 feet of snow has fallen so far.
NY Gov. Cuomo Issues Travel Ban In NYC
Knowing the quarrel between the mayor and the governor, this is another instance (minimum wage and homelessness previously) where Cuomo seems to be overstepping DeBlasio in NYC to show his political muster while undermining the mayor’s decision/authority to be credited for such call–travel ban. Shouldn’t the ban in the city be declared first by the mayor, then approve by the governor? Or, is Cuomo helping DeBlasio of any scrutiny (which he had been hit with since taking office) from the public about this call if DeBlasio were to call it himself? I know that Cuomo is polishing his presidential resume. But … damn!
My daughter delivers newspapers overnight, 7 nights a week, 150 miles driven daily. Even with this mess she will get complaints from customers because their paper was delivered at 10 AM rather than 3 AM. Heaven help if she can’t make it period… will be page after page. You would think the newspaper phone banks would have instructions to tell callers that due to weather but no…
Then you get county “fathers” even 12 hours after a storm has passed who still don’t make sure roads are passable (exception in front of their home, which is spotless even at height of storm). Reason, it will just warm up and that is a waste of taxpayers money. Could care less about nurses trying to get to a midnight shift, or the fire truck stuck on icy roads trying to get to a fire, etc, etc…
Lived in Western NY years ago when a early December storm dumped some 24+inches and my normal commute of 30 minutes took over 4 hours. Later in January another big storm was forecast. I could have taken a nap in the middle of one of the regions busiest intersections without fear. About 3 inches fell and people and businesses complained. Forecaster was reassigned. If however, people would have traveled about 15 miles father west they would have seen 20 foot drifts. That is how near the storm got. But folks and businesses were inconvenienced so hell must be paid and someone must be at fault.
