You know, normal human beings sometimes express themselves clumsily and hurtfully. Probably everyone you care about has upset you that way now and then. We’re not all poised when trying to comfort someone in the depths of grief, or prepared with the perfect thing to say.
Not content with merely repeating a horrendous encounter with a gold star family, Trump is now also talking about “proof” of the real conversation a la the Comey tapes. Yes, he’s promoting the idea he either secretly records calls with grieving parents/widows or else has other people listen in on the calls. He thinks promoting that idea is a win.
The family has been victimized three times–once by the death of Sgt. Johnson, a second by Trump’s complete lack of empathy (a quality that is beyond him, even in such circumstances) and a third time as he lies to cover his trail.
The man is not just a disgrace to the presidency. He is a disgrace to the human race.
What happens when Trump reverts to “Yeah, I said it. So what?”
mode? He really has no shame. They’ll just switch to, “It’s disrespectful to make an issue of the President’s heartfelt remarks. Like many sincere people [and unlike Obama], the President doesn’t always say the most polished thing when he is feeling deeply”.
These lies just flow so easily. @old_curmudgeon He’s makes the Scorpion in Aesop’s fable look like Jesus.
“there is a serous staff problem, somebody should have prepared notes, crib-sheets etc for Donald before such a call and walked him through the moves.”
I’m sure there is a serious staff problem. But even if someone had done all of that do you think this guy would have paid attention? Would he have taken the time to look at the notes, be walked through the moves? Not a chance.
Trump is really a piece of shit, isn’t he. Who is his base going to believe-- Huckabee Sanders or the family in the car listening to our asshole in chief.
Perhaps someone can find it–I can’t, but I vaguely remember W. Bush making a similar comment in response to complaints that some Guard units had been deployed to either Iraq or Afghanistan two or three times. His comments came out something like, “When they signed up, they knew that this was a possibility.” Bush had a pretty limited perspective and knowledge on most things, but the difference was he had a staff of competent spinners surrounding him; this guy has Kelly and a bunch of third-stringers. As I recall, the Bush folks massaged W’s comments into oblivion quickly and cowed the compliant media into looking the other way. You know, Dancin’ Dave and Kool Karl.
Serious question here: Does anyone know his approval rating among those in the military and their families? They were staunch supporters of Derp 45 when he was a candidate, probably because they could not imagine a woman Commander-in-Chief.
If anything, Trump would have put Stephen Miller in charge of drafting remarks, and they would have begun, “At least your son wasn’t living in the ghetto of the Democrat plantation.”
