These are the kind of things that won’t get a lot of headlines in this election but will matter a lot in future elections. All politics is really local in NC.
A presumably unconstitutional amendment to the North Carolina state constitution, promoting voter suppression–what does it provide, and what is its future in terms of the courts?
Good for Cooper. Fuck those sore losers
Was interesting to me how mixed the results on the non candidate issues went, i.e. the constitutional amendments, as well as some of the candidate mixes.Much like the previous election where we got a D gov. and R vice gov.
The legislature sees the vote as a successful power grab – photo IDs now required by the constitution, and the language gave the legislature the power to determine what photo ID will meet the requirement.
I wonder, though, if the constitutional requirement will lead NC courts to find that the state now has increased obligation to help voters obtain acceptable ID, and I wonder if those courts would be more open to challenges of the decisions the legislature makes regarding which IDs are acceptable and which are not.
There is no question that the amendment gave the legislature the power to determine the specific ID requirements, but the legislature’s decisions must conform with the rest of the NC constitution and the NC supreme court now has a 5-2 Dem majority.
