Discussion: More Evacuations In Midwest As Floodwaters Head Downstream

Whereas I have compassion for all these folks, their political choices vis a vis their self interest, are infinitely mockable. And, additionally, flood damage is so much worse now because there are more people and property in flood prone areas. And areas not previously thought to be flood prone are now so., e.g., consider coastal flooding.

People who live on flood plains shouldn’t throw water balloons.

Exactly. That’s kinda the point I always see here. The whole problem of the Red States being net recipients of Federal tax dollars, you’d think they’d be much more inclined to be supportive of big government as it puts more in their pockets that’s coming out of the Blue States.

Article: Aleido Rojas Galan, 52, of Norfolk, Nebraska, was swept away in floodwaters Friday night in southwestern Iowa, when the vehicle he was in went around a barricade. Two others in the vehicle survived — one by clining to a tree. On Thursday, James Wilke, 50, of Columbus, Nebraska, died when a bridge collapsed as he used a tractor to try and reach stranded motorists.

These are two tragedies that will only multiply as climate change continues to change our environment. One person was responsible for a death (their own or passenger’s) by ignoring well-publicized safety precautions. The other died trying to help folks. Neither family will get any government assistance because, as noted above, it goes to property owners. It was striking to me when the NZ Prime Minister said how they–the government, not private charities/donations–would help the families of the victims.

At least global warming is helping bird migration flyways become better established in flood plains along the big rivers. This is something Republicans have fought for decades. Who needs more pollinators when you can build more empty malls on these flood plains instead? Do you think conservatives are ready yet to back down in evidence of their stupidity? Probably not. Trump will be talking about building flood walls from Canada to the Gulf next…on both sides of each of the great American rivers to stop birds from migrating illegally? Stephen Miller knows about this things.

It’s only going into the pockets of rich donors in those red states via tax cuts only for the wealthy.

I live in CT and the representatives for these people voted against aid when we were flooded. But, should we treat them the same? There are Democrats, Women and Children suffering, it is our duty as members of a Civilized Nation and as Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc. to help those in need. Yes, many of these people are vile human beings. Some wisdom I picked up is Be Gracious to Your Enemies.

The Cooper Nuclear Station on the Missouri River, just South of Brownville, Nebraska, didn’t shut down today, when the record flood stage surpassed the station’s official shutdown threshold of 45.5’. The river hit 45.73’ today, but has since receded a bit, but is expected to rise again to 45.9’ on Tuesday. Tough call, I guess the sand bags on top of the levee and against the doors will control the risk. Hard to find any news of the station’s status…not surprisingly. Here’s the river gauge link at Brownville. https://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=oax&gage=bron1

#45’ is going to tear a rotator cuff throwing all those rolls of paper towels.

St. Donnie the Bountyful will toss them underhanded.

It comes natural to him…

Whoa…

Is it small enough to be drowned in a bathtub yet?

(Oops, gosh, maybe not the best image under the circumstances. Wanna rethink that one, Grover?)

Bub…bub…but… it’s cold and rainy and snowy, so how can there be such a thing as global warm… (never mind, goes away, finds desk, pounds head)

Why yes, I’m old and a Pirates fan.
