Discussion: MO Religious Exemption Measure Advances Despite 30-Plus-Hour Filibuster

Discussion for article #247109

I just love how the ‘persecuted’ are allowed to discriminate against those they insist are discriminating. Uh huh.

If it is signed into law, the people of Missouri are going to have to pay to defend this stupid law in the courts. And it will probably be struck down. That’s a waste of everybody’s money and time.

honest to whatever phony ass god you people pretend to pray to…

you hold a four time married bitch in Kentucky up as a moral example and think that it’s her life and its OK because she was ‘fourgiven’?

you’re providing a SERVICE… it doesn’t require you to approve of someone else’s marriage or living arrangements… it requires you to bake a cake or deliver flowers… PERIOD

you AREN’T making any moral or religious statement… you’re just losing money for your ‘business’…

Seriously though, why are they wasting their time with bills like these when there are zombies in the legislature. Just look at that guy. GTFO of the building, everyone! That’s a bloodthirsty mother fucker right there!

What are these GOP’ers going to do when they get what they want. When abortion is 100 % impossible, when you can tell gay folks to fuck off and you can buy a howitzer. What will they do? They aren’t worth a shit at anything that matters.

Missouri’s GOP-led Senate on Wednesday advanced a proposal to add greater religious protections to the state Constitution for some business owners and individuals opposed to gay marriage after Democrats stalled a vote for more than 30 hours

well…that will be flunking soon.

The measure would prohibit government penalties against those who cite “a sincere religious belief” while declining to provide goods or services of “expressional or artistic creation” for same-sex marriage ceremonies or ensuring celebrations.

hmmm@generic discriminatory term

This should be called the “Religious Bigotry” bill.
It demands that ANYONE for ANY REASON (as long as they say “religion” is involved) can discriminate at will in ANY case. No proof required.
Don’t want to rent to Ni(CLANG!)? Your religion forbids it.
Don’t want to sell to Queers? Your religion forbids it.
Don’t want to let different races inter-marry? Your religion forbids it.
Don’t want hire any Wetbacks? Your religion forbids it.
Don’t want to admit Jews into your club? Your religion forbids it.
Don’t want to let any Muslims in your store? Your religion forbids it.
Don’t want to teach Science in your schools? Your religion forbids it.
Don’t want to provide equal pay or promote women into management? Your religion forbids it.
Don’t want to provide medical coverage to your employees? Your religion forbids it.
Want the power of the STATE to enforce all of YOUR bigotries while denying everyone else their rights?
YOUR religion DEMANDS it!

If this passes, will businesses be allowed to put up “STRAIGHTS ONLY” signs in their front windows?

Maybe we should have warning labels on super market products forbidding the sale to minorities or gays.

Somehow I think capitalism will work this out in the long run. What a waste of tax payer dollars.

Well now, isn’t that an infringement on the plain ordinary bigot’s right to discriminate ?

Although I have very limited sympathy for bigots in general, those who refuse to provide services to same sex marriages particularly perplex me. Instead of saying something benign and inoffensive like “sorry, our schedule does not allow us to accommodate you,” they proudly proclaim their bigotry as loudly and offensively as possible. Surely “don’t ask, don’t tell” in this case would eliminate a massive amount of hurtful litigation, not to mention bad feelings caused by the haters to those looking to celebrate a marriage.

what i find most hypocritical about republicans and their religious right zealots is that they love to cloak themselves in names like “liberty” and “patriots” yet they dole out and stifle liberty and patriotism like it’s a limited resource. only gun owners and “christians” deserve liberty while minorities and muslims and lgbtq folks aren’t patriotic enough to be able to live their own lives in peace. i’ve voted republican in the past because i’ve always believed in the best candidate getting the job but i’ll never vote republican again because of their demagoguery.

This is one of those solutions without a problem. I mean there have been a handful that have come out saying that this is a big deal in any way. All this really does is let anybody do whatever they want so long as they have whatever a sincere religious belief.

Do you have to know they are gay? Is somebody violating their religious liberty if they do not say they are and get help from them? I mean it is not like there are no issues at all with this. Given how broad a category religion is.
