Discussion: Missouri Guv: State Highway Patrol Will Take Over Security In Ferguson

Discussion for article #226435

Welp, that’s at least the first step. Got a long way to go, but a public undermining of the shit that’s taken place is a start.

Escalation is easy. How the hell do you deescalate it at this point?

Finally, leaders talking about turning DOWN the heat. This grew out of control very fast. The mayor of St Louis sounded a whole lot reasonable than the mayor of Ferguson. It just seems like the police and mayor wanted this to get out of hand.

I can only hope that the MHP will handle the situation better than the local cops. And of course that’s setting a pretty low bar.

Mississouri.

Nixon is refusing to answer pertinent questions and used the phrase “looking forward, not backward”. Translation: we’ll say the right thing until such time as the media moves on to the next story then go back to business as usual". It’s gonna take more social violence to solve this I’m afraid.

LedeFix:
“Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon announced on Thursday that the Missouri Highway Patrol would assume control of security in Ferguson, Mo., taking over for the local law enforcement who have thus far have been f^cking up royally.”

I’m listening to this governor right now. Not too impressed. Everyone on stage seems to be going out of their way to say they expect good conduct and appropriate ways for protestors to legally protest, but never addressing the police actions to date, in fact carefully trying not to offer *any criticism * of this police force or how they’ve conducted themselves in relationship to this community. Kinda a whitewash if the expectation that police accountability should also be at issue in fomenting unrest and was gonna be addressed at this press conference. It wasn’t.

De-escalation will be a good thing…but blaming the public for the actions of the police is never going to cut it…even if it turns out to be one or two in the crowd that committed some criminal activity in the last few days. The public and the greater community can see for themselves what’s going on there.

Is this governor popular in Missouri? I can’t see how…He’s not very adept at addressing this particular type issue.

The local law enforcement had been given all the military style stuff and were just dying for the chance to act like rambo and use it. I hope they’re happy with how bad they fucked up.

Well, relieving them of this duty is certainly saying something about their conduct.

Except crimes have been committed by the police as it related to the community’s constitutional rights. Seems like its worthy of being addressed to some degree if only to acknowledge it, at the very least.

I think the police and mayor are so used to controlling the Black folks in Ferguson with such unchecked power that it didn’t occur to them to treat the current situation any differently than they have treated past incidents despite the national media attention. Plus, I’m guessing they were completely unprepared for and even shocked by the nearly unanimously negative attention their department has received. They’ve spent so long treating Black people like peasants in a kingdom that they’re surprised when others think there’s something wrong with that.

We can only hope that it will be addressed in the days, weeks, maybe months to come.

It had better be.

Another Nixon that needs to resign in disgrace.

Which is defined as?

How so and why?

He was very careful not to use the word “deescalation” instead he said they would present a “softer front.”

Rioting and looting is the only reason the media is talking about the militarization of police. This is an indictment of our feckless media. You have to create a big enough brouhaha before they break from the happy talk round table discussions news has devolved into. That’s not the way things go in a democracy, but it is in an oligarchy.
