“The annual estimate for 2018 is the most liberal ever recorded in the 68 year history of Mood, just slightly higher than the previous high point of 1961.”
Bring on the next Summer of Love.
And we ended up with this? WTF?
“public’s vision for the government’s size and scope”
Not sure what questions they asked. But if they asked about abortion and religions, I’m sure rethugs would score high.
some of it may be statistical noise associated with the cretin in the WH and that which could be reaction to the governing party that would come with any change in administration
but how much could be attributable to the rightward shift of the nation over the last 40 years, so that the frame in which it is viewed has also moved, making it appear more liberal?
how much is attributable to a shift in population demographics? which clearly has the repubes insanely spooked
I have no answers, but I am curious
Oh dear Gawd no, let’s not. First of all, the world is too insane to be doing acid right now…bad trip…
Second, the Summer of Love (1967) didn’t turn out too well. Or even it’s 50th anniversary celebrations for that matter.
Best thing to come out of that was HAIR came to Broadway.
Escalation in Vietnam and intro for Nixon, etc., etc.
No, no, let’s not do that.
The real heartbreaker is the summer of 1961 when we had a handsome young president who inspired us to go to the moon. That was probably the best year in American history to be in college.
Late: I realize that being in college in 1961 was probably a pretty white and male endeavor and I do not mean to glorify a point in our history lacking basic civil rights, just that it was a time when youth and hope for the future was at a high point.
Even if true, there is no way democratic leadership would ever act on it. Then we might face blowback and lose the support. Best to do nothing with it so we lose the support from apathy.
“The U.S. public’s vision for the government’s size and scope is “the most liberal ever recorded” in the 68-year history of what’s known as the Public Policy Mood estimate…”
So? Since when does how the public feels factor into politics at all? See Tim Wu’s NYT article:
“About 75 percent of Americans favor higher taxes for the ultra-wealthy. The idea of a federal law that would guarantee paid maternity leave attracts 67 percent support. Eighty-three percent favor strong net neutrality rules for broadband, and more than 60 percent want stronger privacy laws. Seventy-one percent think we should be able to buy drugs imported from Canada, and 92 percent want Medicare to negotiate for lower drug prices.”
See any rush by the US Senate to address these needs? Of course not. The US Senate does not even remotely resemble America.
See Mr. Wu’s article here:
At first glance, I saw “Kremlin” in the WH.
Actually…
Keep hope alive!
Too bad the GOP won’t let people with these liberal views vote.
Which means that Democratic Party officials and the DNC will see to it that the most CONservative candidate possible will get the nomination for President…
“The annual estimate for 2018 is the most liberal ever recorded in the 68 year history of Mood, just slightly higher than the previous high point of 1961,” Stimson wrote…"
GOSH! This makes me wonder if conservatives have been doing something wrong!
I think we ended up with President Russian Asset first, then became liberal. Or at least I think that’s what this study is claiming.
Actually most conservatives have moved on to being reactionaries.
Awww, c’mon. I hear 1968 was a great year here in America. We’re almost back to that point right now. We’re almost there!
In all seriousness, though, you nailed it. No do-overs of the 60s, and especially the 70s!
The Senate Majority is controlled by 26 states representing 18% of the population. These are mostly white rural states.
2 of the last 3 Presidents were not elected by a majority vote. Most votes for President in most states are meaningless and have no impact on the Electoral College.
The population of the United States is about 327 million people.
Mitch McConnell, who rules the world, was elected with about 400,000 voters.
Nancy Pelosi was elected with about 276,000 votes.
Most of the arcane rules of the House or Senate that give so much power to McConnell and Pelosi are not part of the Constitution.
And they are all paid off with campaign contributions bribes.
We live in an oligarchy, not a democracy or a representative republic.
No Democracy, no justice.
“Most liberal ever recorded” I would like to know what was the starting point for this poll.
If true the Senate, Presidency and the SC certainly don’t reflect this.
Ditto, the 70’s spawned disco…
Thanks for posting this!
