There could always be some proverbial straw that breaks the equally-proverbial camel’s back. But like others here, my cynicism about the current crop of Republican congresscritters (including senators) is near-boundless by now, and I’ve seen practically zero evidence that that cynicism is misplaced. In fact, as days and outrages go by and none of them pull that trigger, the evidence in favor of the cynicism only mounts.
[/quote]Yes, exactly. The Republicans who are insisting they will stand up to Trump if he goes too far are like the “Salami tactics” of nuclear deterrent from Yes Prime Minister’s The Grand Design. The Chief Scientific Advisor notes that the Soviets won’t launch an attack against the UK such that the “nuclear deterrent” would ever be a valid response. Instead, they will proceed “slice by slice.”
“If they invade Warsaw, would you press the button?”
“Er, no.”
“How about Berlin? The button?”
“No…”
“Brussels, Paris? The button?”
“I don’t think so.”
“So what is the last straw? Piccadilly?”
Despite their insistence that they could be a check on Trump, we’ve reached Piccadilly and they still haven’t pushed the button. At this point, it seems ridiculous to suggest that something new will finally push them over the edge to push “the button” and turn on Trump.
