In my dreams this is how the meeting would play out – Obama is waiting in the Oval Office, and introduces the nominee standing beside him as they enter the room. Then he and the nominee sit down to hear what they have to say … just as soon after they pick their jaws off of the ground.

Obama is a class act. He’s gonna tell Mickie and Chuck that this is their last chance to provide the “advice” part of “advice and consent.” They will refuse, and by doing so lose any chance to moderate the nominee. Their position, will cost them the Senate, cost them the Presidency, and lead to another Justice Sotomeyer.

I mean think about it! This was their chance to get another Justice Kenedy and they blew it. Does either Senator McConnell or Grassley really thing they will maintain the presidency and the senate? They will almost certainly lose the presidency, unless they can pull of a miracle. The best bet would have been one of the following:

The president could have named a recess appointment. This would have screwed the Dems in November and made life easy for Mitch.
Mitch can demand a moderate. By loudly announcing criteria for the next justice, they could have forced Obama to compromise.

But they are choosing a third option: act like children and get voted out of office.
