Discussion: McConnell: Corker Is A 'Particularly Important Player' In The Senate

Now, now. If Corker were bi he would have never been allowed to stay even this long.

The important take away from Corkerā€™s responses over the weekend, to me at least, is that McConnell/Trump now have 2 Senators that they canā€™t controlā€¦Corker, because he is retiring, and McCain, because he is dying.

That puts the two of them in extremely powerful positions. McConnell has zero passes to hand out now on anything. For the next 13 months, they basically own the GOP caucus.

O I donā€™t know about that. For example everyone in the GOP knew that Denny Hastert was a pedophile and all they did about it was to warn the pages.

Shorter McConnell: I canā€™t afford to have Corker go rogue.

You might as well add Collins at this point. I canā€™t see her sticking around in DC with Moore on the way and Cotton potentially headed to run the CIA.

@chelsea530 Beat you to it by a moment. Cotton is working the narcissist to get what he wants.

Looks like Cotton isnā€™t playing along.

Cotton to the Defense

Tom Cotton is no Bob Corker. At least not yet. And he has a message for Tillerson and Mattis: If you canā€™t get with the Trump program, quit.

Heā€™s a disgusting piece of crap, that one.

I had heard that about Mark Foley, but I didnā€™t realize that it Hassertā€™s past was also common knowledge.

Asked to respond to Corkerā€™s criticisms of the President, McConnell said, ā€œHeā€™s an important part of our team and heā€™s a particularly important part of the budget debate which will be on the floor next week.ā€

A very diplomatic way of saying ā€œYouā€™re fucking yourself over again, Mr. President. Donā€™t say I didnā€™t warn you.ā€

Also a signal to the rest of the party that he, Mitch McConnell, is trying to get their precious tax cuts through, but that, once again, Trumpā€™s big dumb mouth is making that task much, much harder.

I wonder if we ever get to the point where McConnell just gives up on trying to quietly save Trump from himself, and instead of trying to control the chaos, just leans into it. Either by openly declaring Trump to be unfit and his presidency to be a disaster (as Corker has basically done) or by just throwing up his hands and just rolling his eyes and no longer trying to run interference for Trump. I guess since he hasnā€™t so far, itā€™s going to have to get even worse before he doesā€¦if he ever would.

Heā€™s pushing very openly for a Cabinet position. Wonder what form of humiliation his eventual degradation by Trump will come in.

You are correct about Collins, with a caveat. She is clearing eyeing a campaign for the Maine governorship. So, she is still going to need GOP support and money. McCain and Corker donā€™t. (though I do think there is a pretty fair chance that Corker will run for something else down the road).

EDIT: I donā€™t buy Cotton as Director of CIA. I donā€™t think he even wants it. His eyes are on the Oval Office, its just a matter of when. He is extremely young (37), so he has the time. But my guess is, he wants to spend that time in the Senate increasing his name recognition. I would guess 2 terms.

I know I know butā€¦WTF IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE??? Trump should not be insulting ANY Of these people in the public square. If he has differences he should ā€˜invite them to dinnerā€™. For him to parade his flying monkeys that CORKER was irresponsible is too fking rich. His favorite saying and those of his sycophants is ā€˜When people hit Donald, he hits back.ā€™ OK two year old. When YOU strike out donā€™t be such a whiny wimp when OTHERS strike back. WE HAVE SHT TO DO.

Think about it McTraitor, a quick call to the Koch brothers to tell them to have Lyinā€™ Ryan start impeachment and this could be over in a few months.

[Corker] suggested last week that he would be willing to vote against a Republican tax plan if it increases the deficit.

It will be entertaining to see how this plays out since Ryan and Mulvaney both admit that even with dynamic scoring and unsupported assertions of GDP growth the budget still adds $1.5 trillion to the debt. That is a tad more than the ā€œsingle centā€ standard Corker has laid down.

I may be misremembering - there was quite a cluster of those revelations around that time. Denny maybe just covered for Foley - I canā€™t trust that you arenā€™t right

Who knows what weā€™ll learn when the Russians dump the info they stole from the RNC. Itā€™s long been suspected that Cotton is not as straight as he professes to be, but itā€™s probably something far worse.

It could be true. But I think the story was that various folks had gone to Hassert who was said to have spoken with Foley. Which in retrospect makes the whole scenario even more gross. I think the Hassert revelations happened several years later - and after, he left Congress (I could be wrong about that - as well.)

You know, Iā€™ve found that the ones who scream the loudest have the most to hide. Case in point - the Trump family, but there have been others.

I think youā€™re probably right about that.

McConnell seems to be using this same question-avoidance, donā€™t-want-to-answer technique more frequently. As some have suggested, maybe itā€™s also a subtle way to try to send a message to Trump. But, even if you get in his face and scream something about legislative process or governance, he wonā€™t comprehend in the least.

Good point. I will just add that it also seems quite possible that Collins might run for Governor as an Independent. If she did, I think sheā€™d have a strong chance of winning with a ā€œcoalition of the middleā€ consisting of (relatively) moderate Republicans, Independents, and some Democrats. If thatā€™s what sheā€™s planning, then sticking her finger in Trumpā€™s eye and continuing to demonstrate a willingness to buck the GOP leadership may be mostly to her benefit.

If she runs for the GOP gubernatorial nomination, I am pretty sure sheā€™d face some furious opposition from the Trump / LePage forces in Maine. She might even lose the primary despite being a strong candidate for the general election. If she won, she might face low turnout in the general from supporters of her primary opponent(s). Meanwhile, Maine has a long tradition of Independent governors. So I could see her potentially deciding to go that route.

Obviously this is all just speculation. But if Collins starts to act more and more like sheā€™s a member of the no-fucks-left-to-give brigade, that could be why. She may conclude ā€“ and may be correct to conclude ā€“ that the party needs her more than she needs the party
