Discussion: McCain Warns That Suppressing Free Press Is 'How Dictators Get Started'

Allow me to get in before the purity police and the grandpa jokes and say he seems to be the only Republican willing to speak up, and I’m glad he’s there. Perhaps he can refurbish his image by being the next Howard Baker?

the most scary thing about saying things like ā€˜enemy of the people’ is that it invokes images of the Iron Boot coming down on the necks of people…

worse… the Party of the President that saved the Union now appears to be poised to be the party that tears the Union apart and they refused to recognize it…

the snark part… even Gramps yelling at clouds can occasionally say something intelligent… but saying it and acting on it are two different things… Gramps had his chance to act on it during confirmation hearings and blindly went along with the herd of the Party…

I’m glad he is doing this, but his words would carry more weight if he didn’t rubber stamp everything Trump has done so far. And if he hadn’t unleashed Palin on us which lowered the bar for what is acceptable by a politician by about 1000 notches.

And all the angry "Yeahbutwhatabout"s you see in these situations. To put it positively myself, I’ll welcome any good he can do. Compared to McConnell and Ryan he’s Atticus Finch right now.

McCain is no longer driven by ambition to be president. Even he knows that ship has sailed. He is still a Republican and does Republican things that we don’t agree with and even abhor. But if he had switched sides, his words would have absolutely no impact on the right. Let’s take our allies where we can. I personally think he is a patriot putting country above party as best he can. His picking Palin was due to a character flaw (one of many IMHO) not an unpatriotic disregard for the country.

Bill Maher said it
Where are the sane Republicans?
They need to be the ones to stand up to Trump
All those ā€œNever Trumpā€ people who became enablers
Party before country indeed.

You may be a bit generous with him there, but yeah, in general, I agree.

One thing we know is that for whatever reason, anything he says seems to be worth a couple of dozen comments from Democrats.

As an Arizonan, with McCain and Flake, my advice is to listen carefully to what they say, but it’s more important to watch what they actually do.

He voted against Mulvaney. It’s a start.

Graham has been good - especially re calling for investigations.

I think we need to keep in mind one thing as this portion of our nation’s history unfolds: this shit takes time. Politics is a slow process. First someone speaks out. Then someone else speaks out. This encourages more, until enough speak out and action starts. Then the action takes forever. Things get done, but if you want fast, you came to the wrong political system. It’s frustrating, but it is what it is. A dictatorship would be much faster, but…

Good first start, John, but you have to keep pushing and enlist allies on both sides of the aisle. If you stop now, it is only posturing for the cameras.

Introduce a bill, vote ā€œNoā€ on something or someone, or shut the hell up. This is the first Greek tragedy where I want the chorus (of faux-outraged loyal servants) to be banished.

Get this guy a pink hat STAT.

Whether by intent or accident, all Sidney’s doing now is creating a smoke screen around the actions of the GOP Congress

Yawn. Wake me when he actually does something productive that doesn’t involve standing in front of a microphone.

Yahhbut, McCain is so CONCERNED! about the tenor of Trump’s talk. Just look at that CONCERN, spilling all over the place. I’m so glad we have a statesman of his caliber willing to speak so obliquely about his concern while not actually doing anything to resist Trump.

Yeah, sorry, not going to lick McCain’s balls just yet just because he shows a modicum of concern in one speech.

There has been no reporting here of Joe Manchin’s vote in confirming Rs, and Heitkamp as well. They voted to confirm climate change denier Pruitt and Manchin voted to confirm Sessions. Manchin’s up for reelection in 2018, and his votes for R nominees are going to help preserve his sorry ass.

Saw those votes somewhere else I seem to recall. Don’t really know much about him.
