It’s been quiet for a while, and now we need to send Mattis to Korea?
I’m sure that Kim will interpret this as peace outreach.
Makes you wonder what is about to break in the Russia probe.

The drumbeat for war, and all the various tools used to justify it, are being mustered. Today HuffPo runs a front page blare, obviously designed to stoke public anger in coordination with all the other warmongers:

Aerial Images Reveal North Korea’s Secret Network Of Prisons And ‘Re-Education’ Camps

And this, prominent from AP and U.S. News:

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Vice President Mike Pence is planning a visit to North Dakota.

U.S. Sen. John Hoeven says Pence will visit Minot Air Force Base on Friday.

Hoeven is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and co-chairman of the Senate Air Force Caucus. He and Pence will review the Minot base's nuclear missions.

The base is home to B-52 bombers and also oversees Intercontinental Ballistic Missile silos throughout the North Dakota countryside.

Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson and Defense Secretary James Mattis visited the Minot base earlier this month.

And TPM's amplification of the Mattis cage rattling, via AP:

PANMUNJOM, Korea (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis accused North Korea on Friday of building a nuclear arsenal to “threaten others with catastrophe” and said the Trump administration remains committed to compelling the North to accept complete nuclear disarmament.

So, when do we hear the final outrage, North Korean soldiers overturning infant incubators in charity hospitals across the South Korean border? Maybe the arrest of an alleged North Korean assassin, bent on killing Trump, found hiding at the base of the Lincoln Memorial? Face it people, the drumbeat for war is rising, the media are complicit, and the barely accurate half-truths coming your way will soon be akin to drinking from a fire hose. And what are Trump's option should hostilities commence? Damned few in conventional terms, North Korea has Seoul in the crosshairs of a few thousand artillery batteries that no amount of conventional bombing and ground assault will nullify. So Trump asks for the football. And Seoul still gets leveled. 10 million people with exploding steel hell raining down on them before a mushroom cloud or two appears. Get ready.

I got gigged on another board for saying this, but one survival strategy for Kim is to pass through the grapevine that one or more of his nukes is randomly targeted – if NK goes down, it’s (possibly) taking down somebody else with it. MAD isn’t dead.

Kim doesn’t need to threaten use of nukes. If he turned loose artillery commanders on the DMZ South Korea would soon be hell on earth. He has a credible threat of massive destruction at his disposal without ever unleashing a ballistic missile. Why antagonize Japan when Seoul will do?

The point is not to make a direct threat to any one specifically. The point is to make it clear that a nuclear attack on NK may very well result in a conflagration that would not be limited to the Korean Peninsula.

This could be true anyway, regardless of what Kim says or does.

Trump doesn’t care about the lives of others. He’s driven primarily by deep seated, pathological insecurities. He has never felt accorded the respect he deserves. He’s just self aware enough to know he’s not well liked, he’s the butt of jokes, and people think he’s a glorified rodeo clown. There are damned few gestures or acts tailored to disabuse a few billion people of all that more apt than waging nuclear annihilation.

North Korea has some prototypes. We have but one of several of the world’s arsenals.

If Mr. Kim is willing to sacrifice his wretched nation, much greater consequences* will fall on the rest of the world. Seoul by itself would be a much greater loss than all of North Korea. Throw in chemical and biologic agent missile warheads on Tokyo, and the loss ratio gets a lot worse. After that we are banking on the Chinese and Russians not to honor their mutual defense treaties with North Korea which means a nuke for a nuke retaliation. As much as conservatives love the Old Testament when it serves their needs, and as much as it might result in the flat Earth they believe in, there really is no possible big win in this scenario for them to gloat over. We really need some adults in on this decision. (Think of your children Ivanka.) What we have is a smiling Dotard cruising around New York City in Golf Cart One wearing a nuclear suicide vest with a big red button that says: DO NOT PUSH THIS BUTTON!

*See: Osama bin Laden.

Maybe the buffoons in the White House and on Faux should quit quit provoking NK, that might help cool things down…

Renewed threats to North Korea at this juncture by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis are disingenuous. South Korea has realized by now that it has become a victim of our President’s desperate attempt to survive politically.
Indeed, Donald Trump’s effort to survive also concerns other Asian countries and it should also concern Congress. This should even concern Jim Mattis. Though Donald Trump is his boss, the good of the country comes first. Even Richard Nixon had accepted that, but it is not clear that Trump will. As such, we should remain vigilant and somehow get ready beforehand. There is not a whole lot any of us can do when nuclear bombs are going off.
