Discussion: Massachusetts Guv Apologizes For Defending South Carolina's Right To Fly Confederate Flag

You did a perfectly adequate job of representing your views, Governor. And now you’re trying to make sure everyone forgets that.

You’re an ass.

@BillFromPA - I too was hoping it was an editorial error, but when I remembered he is an ® I knew it wasn’t.

@estamm - Ancestors, former slaves and descendants, yes. Soldiers in the war, no. Hyperbole is just another way for him to cover his ass.

@JCS - Amen.

The “stars and bars” is NOT a reference to the Confederate Battle Flag but instead to the official flag of the Confederacy. Which by the way you can see practically unchanged except with the addition of the State Seal on the Georgia State Flag.

And despite the clear fact that the Confederacy was fundamentally established in defense of slavery the display of the actual Stars and Bars is relatively uncontroversial. What is controversial, and which really didn’t start until 100 years after the War and coincident with the Civil Rights movement, is flying the Battle Flag. Which isn’t and wasn’t ever really designed to be some tribute to ‘Southern Heritage’ but always a big Fuck You to people demonstrating and then legislating for equal rights.

No matter how many ‘Sons of Confederate Veterans’ try to dance on the head of a pin.

I didn’t intend for the Wiki article to actually be inserted picture and all. But it does illustrate the point. If this flag was flying over the SC Statehouse probably few would care. Because less “Fuck you” factor.

You can’t be a Southern Style GOP’er and get elected in Massachusetts. The Guvs initial remarks made him sound like a corn bread and catfish eating Republican. So he walked that crap fast…back to a more New England clambake kind of guy because he had to. He’s going to face his initial remarks in future political contests. He knows that. So he put in a fix.

Semantics does not matter. These days, in the deep South where I live ( South of SC I might say ), the term “stars and bars” means the battle flag of the South. That’s what it means today.

The person displaying it is not necessary doing so out of bigotry. Many folks down here consider it a part of their heritage ( and it is ) and fly it out of a love of the South. I don’t fly it. The American flag is fine by me.

Seriously, how do Republicans get elected in MA?

Are you sure about that? I’ve lived in the South (VA, NC, TX), and my experience is that people who cling to that symbol are hardcore racists, even if they don’t say so in public. It’s amazing what they’ll say in private if they think you’re “one of them.”

I’d suggest working really hard to connect the last noun in your first sentence with the last noun in the second.

It’s only heritage when they want it to reflect something the EEEeeeediots like.

They typically avoid acting like National Republicans - as evidenced by how quickly this guy bit his tongue after he realized he was in line with the Fox stooges.

You would think that a politician that has risen to Governor of state status would have some buffers, either self induced or by some team. Especially if they have foot in mouth disease.
When anything major happens the team should go into action and preempt any dumbassedness that might just roll off of their Govs tongue. The morning briefing should start with what not to say. You know, something like, we know you are pro-southern but just show some compassion and concern and FFS don’t talk about confederate rights or the southern tradition behind that flag.

Governor Charlie Baker ® is too dumb to know better out of the gate but smart enough to be coached and apologize for his stupidity later. Sorry that I am an idiot that said stupid things is a statement that makes him look real bad.
Governor Baker ® definitely needs a preemptive dumbshit filter.

How? The Democrats put up a pathetic candidate like Martha Coakley, not once, but twice, and hand the election to an SOB like this. It’s embarrassing.
