Discussion: Manafort Trial Jury Sends Note To Judge During Fourth Day Of Deliberations

The cynic in me says the jury is hung. MIstrial. One or two Trumpbots refused to find him guilty of anything. Get ready for a right-wing media gloat-festival.

From CNN

There is a note from the jury in the Manafort trial, but no details yet on what the note says.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys are all in the courtroom.

The jury has left the room, but is not in the courtroom – the judge is not in the courtroom yet to call them in.

And if there is a hung trial or mistrial so what? Reality doesn’t always accede to our preconceived notions of how it ought to be. You’d think that we’d have learned this by now with the election of Trump.

Continued riding of the wave of hope -> elation … hope -> dejection when things do/don’t go our way is a lousy way to live.

My worry is that a jury member is bought off. The good ole Mob Way.

I can see a combination of votes on the various charges. Some to convict, some to acquit, and some hung. IANAL, but you see a lot of trial coverage wherein the jury informs the judge they’re hung on a charge, and the judge will ask whether there is a reasonable prospect continued deliberations will resolve the vote one way or the other. And we’ve all read of juries pleading they’re hopelessly hung on a charge, only to have the judge insist they continue to deliberate.

I’m hoping if this is a situation of being hung on a charge(s) there is nevertheless agreement on convictions on others.

Well it appears the Jury has asked a question TPM has just updated the healinr6

The note contained a question for Judge T.S. Ellis, according to MSNBC.

Not a verdict or declaration of a hung jury. Put down the paper bag.

Who the hell is “we”? And while we’re at it who the hell are you to tell us what’s a good life?

What are the chances a jury deliberating on so many counts is hung on all of them? Zero I think. Any jury deliberating a case as serious as this one with the collateral effects it will have on the nation as a whole should take all the time they need. That’s how it “ought” to be.

i am not going to worry about if they are hung or not until there is something to worry about. The question might be simple and refers to a subset of the charges.

Looks like the question was about not being able to come to a verdict on a single count. If I’m reading/interpreting that correctly, it means they have come to verdicts on just about everything else save 1 count. That sounds like good news?

The jury asked in a note: "If we cannot come to a consensus for a single count, how can we fill in the verdict sheet?"

The jury note also said they needed a new verdict sheet, and they asked what not coming to a conclusion would mean for the "final verdict."

That could mean that they are disgreed on all counts, no?

The electorate had over a year to deliberate before 11/8/16 and all their ruminations were for naught.
