I’m pretty sure some exceptions exist to the protection of privilege - one is what is said in the presence of a third party. So whatever was said between them when at least one person not related to the case is present can be entered into evidence, as long as questions do not exceed that particular (or those particular) conversation(s).
If I recall correctly, a client may waive privilege.
Perhaps as a condition for a plea, or immunity(LOL) deal. Or a deal to prevent extradition to someplace, like, oh, say, Ukraine …
