Discussion: Manafort Previews His Defense: It's Rick Gates' Fault

There was the incident where Manafort used email to ask Gates for help in changing a P&L to send to a lender:

Manafort’s defense mirrors the total lack of responsibility for one’s actions this administration and GOP have… “not my fault”.

Narcissist’s Prayer…

That didn’t happen.
And if it did, it wasn’t that bad.
And if it was, that’s not a big deal.
And if it is, that’s not my fault.
And if it was, I didn’t mean it.
And if I did…
You deserved it.

IANAL, but this feels like a token defense. Manafort probably knows his goose is cooked and he is still holding out for a pardon.

I remember this. Manafort is such a criminal mastermind that he didn’t know how to use the ‘save as’ feature in Word. It’s literally that easy btw.

Is Manafort not wearing a shawl and traditional scarf, teary eyed and bereft. He is just a frail, naive international player and multimillionaire who trusted too well. Watch one man’s decent into hell as those closest to him first use him and then toss him aside. (Said in a 70s sexploitation movie voice)

Not sure on the pardon bit. I would go with he is more afraid of other things than sitting in prison.

Meanwhile, Manafort could be heard muttering at the defense table, “Guy just couldn’t keep his trap shut when talking to the law. Goddam snitch.”

“Unfortunately for Paul Manafort, his trust in Rick Gates was misplaced,” Zehnle told the jury.

In fact, all things considered, Zehnle is right …

Oh that poor, poor, man. Shamefully taken advantage of by that shyster. Then actively working for a man who could only get financial help from crooked russians who forced - forced! money upon him to help him with his business genius moves. And then to be misunderstood in this way…what sad times are these.

I see this more as one of the storylines on the Love Boat, and then the scheming gates is taken off the boat in handcuffs while the innocent older gentleman hugs his understanding fiancee - the shawl is a great touch though.

That shawl would likely be at least 15 grand by the way.

He was applying for a bank loan and had a P&L in PDF format, but wanted it in Word to edit it. That sort of sinks the whole Gates, Evil Assistant defense itself.

I’m in agreement with the general consensus, that this is a pretty lame defense but the best one available to Manafort.

The problem with pinning everything on Gates is that all the money and benefit went to Manafort. Will people believe that Gates screwed him over and did all these bad things to put money into Manafort’s bank accounts without Manafort’s knowledge?

lol

Yes, clearly, Manafort should have made the deal, first. Manafort gets second place in the game of “The Prisoners’ Dilemma.” The prize, in this case is likely to be quite literally, an all expenses paid trip to some not terribly exotic location.

His other alternatives included asphyxiating himself then zipping himself into a suitcase, throwing himself off a balcony or Novichok.

Don’t do the crime if you can’t drop a dime or some such thing.

Not all the kids on the short bus are developmentally disabled/mentally challenged, and those that are didn’t ask to be born that way. Many intellectually gifted kids have learning disabilities, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, all sorts of things that put them on the short bus. I know you didn’t mean it that way, but a little caution would be in order. :couple_with_heart:
