The TV metaphor you are using is especially telling when coupled with Differential Association. If the 4.5 hrs/per/day are not balanced by something substantive, that viewer is in some trouble.

Most people in Latin America converse, when they relax. The word “mecedora” is just as important than “televisor”… Especially in Caribbean cultures. Just about all homes have about four of these rocking chairs…no matter what the income level.

Moreover, the TV gets cut off, when a guest arrives (and, for most people, guests arrive most nights). This does not mean that people don’t watch the “televisor” IF there is a guest, but there IS an option.
