Discussion: Maddow Fillets Bill O'Reilly's Tale Of Witnessing JFK Figure's Suicide (VIDEO)

Can’t fit that head in ,M.

OK, I’ll issue a pure intuitive conjecture warning but that said, I still think this whole episode will stick in O’Reilly’s craw. No, it probably won’t outwardly damage his standing much with his employers or audience. But I think there’s a part of O’Reilly that wants to be taken seriously by serious people. I think he understands what being taken seriously means in a way that Limbaugh and Beck don’t. He fails to deserve it a thousand times over, but if you look just at his educational career, it’s easy to think he once had a vision of himself being a real, serious journalist. Not a bloviating, self-aggrandizing bully and liar who’s considered a joke by everyone outside the bubble. I think this final, public proof there’s nothing there will bother him. At least I hope so! Just my $.02.

Nothing will change at Fox News, because it’s not a news station and never was intended to be. It’s an entertainment channel for right wingers - who entertain themselves by feeling victimized and angry - and O’Reilly’s lies, and the public response to those lies, are entertaining. (By the way, this is why Fox hosts think news satires on Comedy Central are competition.)

If Bill O’Reilly was at the front door when that guy killed himself he would be the most important witness to the event. He would have been grilled by Law Enforcement to the nines and there would be a record of that. If that record does not exist, and I think we all know it does not, the man is a liar…a word Maddow respectfully avoided. He is the King of Cable News because of that propensity for lying. It’s what Murdoch needs.

If you are going to shoot Bill down you need to get a little funkier than Maddow is inclined to do.

Yeah, Billo didn’t think that far ahead, or else he presumed that the rubes who listen to him would never fact check him. I agree that Maddow did a very respectful job of exposing Billo’s pattern of embellishment.

To any reasonably disinterested observer, Bill O is a fantasist with a strong need to be seen as a man of dashing
derring-do. The lies, however, he has told of himself will not dissuade his admirers from watching him. He, in turn, fills their need to have their fears and hatreds validated. I suspect that is at the core of the success of all these bastards going back to Father Coughlin on radio.

cluster faux ooze the station that can and will lie its bloated ass off cause the court said it can…thats its first amendment right so billo flaffel oreally has a loooong stay on that network

Man, I’d forgotten that name! I think you’re right. There were also numerous very popular (anyone remember Del Rio TX?) radio stations devoted to the “Christian” right, racist, misogynist etc. back in the day. Or night, rather… the signals went a lot further at night.

Speaking of Father Coughlin and your Humphey Bogart Avatar, It does not mention it in the Wikipedia link but the character played by Humphrey Bogart in the anti Klan film “The Black Legion” is listening to a Father Coughlin radio broadcast. It is ironic that a Klan offshoot group would have a name like the Black Legion.

Maybe, but maybe not. Remember that it is very hard to measure how many people “watch” a show, since it can be time-shifted (by DVR) and platform-shifted (by Roku, etc.). And these alternate viewings, unlike newspapers, often do not involve extra cost. Ultimately, as always, if something attracts viewers, advertisers will be willing to subsidize it.

I think you’re correct. Unfortunately for him, his dream couldn’t out run the reality of who he is: “…a bloviating, self-aggrandizing bully and liar…”

Yes, but the whole segment wasn’t about O’Reilly. As she typically does, she used one story/historical episode (in this case, O’Reilly’s bs accounts) to lead into a general point (hey, we all make mistakes, I did last week, but if you’re a responsible media type you correct it), then into a particular example that brings you to the story of the day (remember when some folks predicted Obamacare’s doom from the oral arguments last time? And then misreported same from a glance at the decision? Well, today…). Love how she does those; I was bummed to see the Billo stuff highlighted here – entertaining as it was – as if that were all she was talking about.

Is it possible that that Bill O’Reilly is extraordinarily well endowed in all of his sensory, auditory and other faculties and could have picked up the audio signal from the gunshot that killed George de Mohrenschildt in Dallas?

Bill O’Reilly is also prescient and omniscient and made the phone call to Fonzi to mislead the lame stream liberal media down the road.

Proof positive that Fox “News” is entertainment masquerading as news when the network does nada about the overwhelming evidence of the ethical wasteland that is Billo reporting. The network has no semblance of journalistic standards. But if you ask its viewers, I bet 99.5% refer to what they are watching as “news.”

My favorite line in Rachel’s report was where she said she’s seen his ratings shoot hers in the head… “or at least I’ve seen pictures of them” and someone laughs in the background. I think she could make the transition to Daily Show host, and be great at it if asked.

I always learn something new when I watch Rachel explain a story.

Right. I drove through Amarillo in December (I drove my yellow Lab from Alaska in October because he is too old to fly, but that’s another story). The hate-radio guy I came across was ranting about the “lesbo-commies” who were the biggest threat to America. It was unclear to me whether he had a problem with straight-commies or male gay communists too.

Yeah? But think of the fun you can have emailing the truth about Bill-O to all the people who’ve plagued you with right wing emails!

Of course Bill O’Reilly is full of crap. So is his audience. That’s what they like about him, he is full of crap and belligerently proud of it. Just like them.

They will say that it’s great that librls are getting all worked up over this and they will love Billo The Clown even more and more and more.
