Discussion: Long-Shot Dem Lincoln Chafee To Address 'Future In The Campaign' Tomorrow

Discussion for article #242092

had raised just $8,300 in the race so far

No future?

Please, don’t make me quote the Sex Pistols.

The problem with being a long shot Dem is that there isn’t the grifting opportunity like there is being a long shot GOP. That weeds them out quicker.

I’m sure someone could build a robot that could raise millions of dollars running for GOP nomination by just randomly shouting out stuff like “Benghazi!”, “Tax Cuts!”, “Border fences!”. Now that I think about it, are we sure that Trump isn’t a newer model of Jaime from Get Smart?

From the very moment the thought popped into Chafee’s head, “Hey, I think I’ll run for President!” there was never, ever, any “future in the campaign.”

To say it was stillborn from the moment of its conception is giving it too much life. How this knucklehead came to the conclusion that it was a worthwhile expenditure of his time is a mystery for the ages.

'Am I right, ladies?

Well, as my father used to say, before he died without remembering to brief me on that bill in the Senate to repeal Glass-Steagall, whenever he asked after my grades, he’d say, Cut to the chase, Linc, & wrap it up.

Now, if each of you could just reach under your chair, right now, you’ll find a commemorative of this event. It’s not a gift, of course, tho you do get to take it home if you want. It’s not any sort of bribe, no campaign of mine would ever do that (We can’t afford it.). It’s, like I mentioned: a little momento of our time together. Go ahead: open it up. Yes, it’s an authentic Re-peel & Eat shrimp, from my staff managing to scrounge off the set of that Direct TV ad. It’s supposed to symbolize my deep commitment to recycling and saving the planet for more repeals & eats.

Don’t get into a lather about extra bits you think shrimp shouldn’t have; you’d be surprised at the changes in Gulf shrimp since that big spill. And don’t start to gag at the first sign of a bit of carpet fluff, or what might look awfully like shrimp colon contents: just ignore the stench and dig right in.

And when you leave today, please make sure to remember where you got that feeling in your digestive tract, and how much this campaign needs your financial donation.’

That’s just embarrassing. The average redneck who’s just blown his arm off playing with blasting caps and a machete would be able to raise more than that for a prosthetic on a GoFundMe page.

While I always liked the Sex Pistols, I’m drawing a blank here…

No future
No future
No future for me…

That Woody Allen quote that 80 percent of success is about showing up? Yeah, this guy must have misunderstood. You have to DO something with the other twenty percent.

Was the campaign ever anything more than an attempt to get on Hilary’s radar as potential veep?

Thing is that Hilary doesn’t need to balance the ticket to the right, she needs balance to the left. Warren would be ideal but two women might cause male panic.

With Chuff-chuff and Webb out, that puts a lot of pressure on O’Malley to fold. Particularly if there is a higher threshold to join in the second debate.

After mixed reviews in the first Democratic presidential debate

What mixed reviews? Somebody, somewhere thought he did well? Who? Where? I am not convinced such a person exists.

The sooner, the better. He’s such a nice guy, that it’s cringeworthy every time he has to try and defend himself from guys who have never bullied anybody in their lives that suddenly turn into Biff Tannen when interviewing Chafee.

Was one of those donors his mother? I served as a campaign chair for my former mayor and he raised more than $8,300. Good God! I live in a city of $100,000 and this guy was running for POTUS!

BTW remember to measure his long-shot bid in the metric system.

O’Malley has no reason to fold. He needs to raise his national profile if he ever wants to later rise to higher office. As long as he isn’t seen as damaging the two first place candidates he has a legitimate reason to be on stage. Remember the Dem’s bench of candidates between 45-55 is very thin.

O’Malley has a shot to get in the next Dem cabinet, and later run for the next Maryland Senate seat that opens up (it’s too late to run for the open seat now). He’ll then be in position to run in 2024. If the Dems somehow lose to the GOP clown show, he’ll also be in a strong position to run in 2020, with a higher national profile (the next in line theory).

saw him on Bill Maher. Very unimpressed. Came across as wishy-washy and not terribly articulate (though not in the GW Bush way). Not sure how he ever got the idea in his head that he could get the nomination, let alone win the presidency. He would have been crushed by any of those nutjobs on the GOP side.

I think Chafee is a genuinely honest, nice guy. He seemed to think that having avoided any kind of scandal in his political career was enough to be a presidential candidate. I wish all politicians had his ethics, but as a President he would be eaten alive. So for his sake, glad to see him move on.

I’d hate to see all the others follow suit and quit, what would become of the 5 remaining debates? Although Hillary Clinton seems to have been vetted by 10 debates in one day today, I’d like to hear the candidate’s opinions on real issues; not Hillary’s email and Benghazi.

Oh, I don’t know… by now Hillary must be ready to talk to herself at great length! And still make more sense than all the GOP candidates put together.

Not in my house. I’d be quite comfortable with that duo running against the repub clown parade.

NO! I don’t want to lose Warren where she is now. We need her there.
