There is also an sick irony here. Many of those same ignorant GOPers and Teabaggers who disgustingly try to equate establishing basic civil rights and equality with the evil of the Nazis taking away basic human rights and murdering thousands upon thousands of Jews, gays, and many more are themselves often quite anti-Semitic. For them, the Nazis are only evil for their convenience.

The GOP, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Roger Ailes and the rest of the Right-Wing Double Think Machine have been doing their best to distort history and people’s understanding of it. Thus, they’ve taken things like Fascism and Naziism and tried to make them Liberal when, in reality, they’re Conservative. They rely upon people not understanding that National Socialism was just double think for Fascism, and that both are a form of Corporatism, which the Conservatives represent.
Simply put, they want people to associate all bad things with Liberalism. The problem is that, instead of people becoming afraid of Liberalism, people have lost their fear of Fascism and Naziism.
I once argued flat out to some idiot Conservative that if they kept comparing homosexuality to pedophilia, they would end up normalizing pedophilia because the majority of people are not afraid of homosexuality.

Now none of this makes sense since the GOTP is the closest thing America has to the Nazi Party. And wouldn’t GOTPers say that flying the swastika over city hall is like flying the Confederate Battle Flag.

I totally support equality, but that flag has no business flying over any public building. Ditto the Confederate flag, nazi flag, or any other emblem embracing one controversial view at the expense of another. Buy whatever flag you want and fly it on your own property, but don’t spend one dime of public money on it and don’t fly it on buildings that belong to all of us. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

I just wish we taught civics properly still. I learned in my eighth grade civics class that there is a difference between a system of government and a philosophy of government. That one could live in a Communist Democracy or a Capitalist Dictatorship.
Of course, I’ve studied History, so a lot of this is stuff I learned over the years. The US spends more time hand wringing about math and science going “oh my word, whatever shall I do about our math and science scores” rather than teaching holistically and making sure students learn history, literature, etc.
Not everyone can be a scientist or a mathematician.
