I agree. I don’t think he was fired either, for the reasons you cited. Also to take a little heat off of them with the negative appearance of Trump having a woman beater on his campaign in order to better appeal to women .
I think CNN thought they when they hired Lewandowski that he would dish on the inner workings of the campaign and that maybe they would get some good dirt on Trump. What they still can’t seem to grasp is that they are being played by the Trump team because if there is one thing Trump does do well is that he manipulates the press due to their massive hard-on for him.
