I am reminded of the great line from a Mae West film—
“Madam, are you trying to show contempt for this court?”
No, Your Honor… I’m trying to hide it."

More GOP harassment: What a shock!
Certainly these letters will influence Congressman Smith (R-Texas/Exxon). NOT.
THIS!
It is abundantly clear that Lamar is abusing his position and using it to perform ILLEGAL discovery for his Oil Masters.
Too bad the Ethics Committee is full of other reps in the Oil Lobby’s pocket.
I wish we had more detail as to why they are unconstitutional. Not doubting that they are but the article doesn’t give me enough information.
Someone has provided the names in a previous reply. I can tell you Floyd Abrams and Erwin Chemerinsky are extremely well-known and respected constitutional scholars. Not to say the others aren’t heavyweights, I’m just not familiar with them. But Abrams and Chemerinsky are names that will get any judge’s attention, that’s for sure.
I thought the repubs were the “states rights” party.
Meanwhile, from Texas we have Lamar Smith, Greg Abbott, Ken Paxton, Dan Patrick, Louie Gohmert, Ted Cruz, Rick Perry, and A. D. Nauseum … taking turns frenchkissing EXXON’s ass.
First off you’d have to elect this notable scientist to Congress. Then that person would have to wait years and many terms and gain seniority and then hope their party has the majority in Congress and then they could be the chairperson. But first off no scientist worth their salt would opt for that. Congress does not attract the best and brightest. I was a scientist in my career and I would never use my findings in a political way. Rather the science is what it is without any bias. Just facts. Measurable repeatable fact. The climate will do what it will do without regard to Lamar Alexander or James Inhofe and what they want to happen. Our world can be damaged by those individuals who refuse to accept evidential reality that is before their eyes. We have only the hope that the voters choose wisely.
Well said.
Oh looky here Eric M Freedman is the Siggi B. Wilzig Law Professor at Hofstra University, Siggi was a oil tycoon. That might leave a mark.
“Science” Committee.
What a joke.
how would lamar know if the subpoenas are legal? after all, isn’t he the science expert?
I know you are joking, but the Republicans aren’t. Most of the current crop of Congressional Republicans days (and all of the alt-right) really do look up to Joseph McCarthy, see him as a conservative hero.
They believe in states rights only when the state agrees with them. Let a state try to set a tighter standard for something than the one set by Congress, and suddenly they’re not so keen on “states’ rights”.
A great line. Alternatively one could say, I don’t hold Congress in contempt, it’s just personal.
Lamar Smith is ‘my’ congressman, and he is the personification of the human skid mark in Congress. How this ignoramus is elected year after year is a testament to the efficacy of gerrymandering. The man couldn’t find his own ass with both hands.
Suppression of public participation, perhaps?
Well, the AG’s will continue to ignore Lamar and his stacked committee. The threats they have already issued are meaningless.
I’ll also venture the SC will side with the AG’s. One can then only hope that the SC will issue a blistering admonishment to the Republiscum committee members. Sadly, even the SC has quite limited power to make Lamar recant or serve jail time.
Oh, a bunch of light weights with some letters behind their names.
