Discussion: Leaked Texts Show TN House Speaker Casada Joking About Age Of Consent

The number of Republicans alive today who aren’t gigantic moral hypocrites wouldn’t fill a schoolbus.

Casada is Speaker of the House in the TN legislature.
He is under fire for employing a rabid racist and knowing that his CoS was a rabid racist. They exchanged emails about it and tried to frame a local activist (black) for calling them out for their racism.

It’s a huge scandal in TN and Casada is under lots of pressure to resign. This is a side issue, really—just a bit of lagniappe to add to the real scandal.

Lock him up! Lock him up!

All together now:

LOCK HIM UP!

No no…I get all that…perhaps my wording was off. My point is merely that they keep highlighting these texts in which he hasn’t done anything wrong, but using breathless and misleading headlines to jumpstart the outrage machine. He’s certainly done wrong things that deserve scrutiny and perhaps even being drummed out of office (at least the question being raised), but so far, the two “salacious” texts…the pole dancer and this one… have been simply immature and sexually oriented, but not “wrong” in the sense of “get this guy out of office right now” or, e.g., Trump joking about sexual assault, which is substantively different than this puerile nothingburger.

Thank you for clarifying. I agree completely…

In the republican party mostly.

Godamn, the whole thing is a “Loaded Statement”.

"A wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband . . "

" . . .has the God-given responsibility to respect her husband and to serve as his helper…"

" . . biblical truth . ."

My Oh My Oh My!

This guy attends church? And they let him continue to say and do this sort of behavior and still be a member? The Conservative Movement isn’t even a movement any longer. It’s a lost cause.

Shouldn’t that be “encrusted” men?

Casada has been trying to claw himself out of the mountain of scandal, and told reporters that “if two texts run someone out of office, then there is no one qualified.”

So, please, everybody, focus on the texts and ignore the context.

Set the racist, sexist, and horny-bro texts aside (for @sniffit ) and you are still left with, among other things, a very strong case that Cothren fabricated evidence and forwarded it to a D.A.]1 in order to have a student activist punished for violating a no-contact order. Casada defended Cothren even though it was pretty clear that the evidence was bogus. It was a photo of an email from the activist showing a date–in the wrong place–one day after the activist was ordered to have no contact with Casada’s office.

No, don’t. As I think I clarified about what I meant, the other ones that are racist and such are clearly bad in the sense that they need to be addressed and call into question his fitness for office. It’s solely the “horny bro texts” that don’t (at least the two I’ve seen). But of course, because of the political climate and the weaponization of things, those are the text that seem to have become a media focus and distraction from the stuff that’s actually concerning.

Texting your buddy a hot picture of a pole dancer is not sexist. She clearly chose to be that picture. You can lament a society in which that can happen to a woman all you want, but the alternative is worse. Ask Saudi Arabian women. It was her choice and I’m pretty sure women like Stormy Daniels would tell anyone who doesn’t like their choices about what to do with their lives to go fuck themselves. And joking about wanting to bed young women? Almost boring. How many “it’s ok to be a cougar on the prowl” articles have we seen waiting in the grocery store line at this point anyway?

The oft unbuckled Bible Belt…

I set them aside because, like the horny-bro texts, they don’t show the TN house speaker doing anything “wrong”.

We find a lot wrong with an elected official who knowingly hires, tolerates, and even defends a racist and sexist chief of staff, but the GOP majority in the TN house clearly isn’t going to set a standard that would define most of them as unfit for office.

From my quick look, I’d say that the residents of TN have been exposed to much more than the salacious texts. The attention to those texts may have had the benefit of making Casada appear vulnerable and of drawing much more journalistic attention to him. The various accusations he’d been skating past are getting dragged out into the daylight. Unintended, and, possibly, unusual side effects of the salacious headlines.

Fair enough. I’m not on the prowl for articles about this, but the two I’ve seen on TPM both focused right in on the horny bro texts instead of the others and this one used it to launch a deliberately misleading click-bait headline.

The racist and actually sexist stuff is bad though…I don’t like seeing focus diverted from it or having its import lessened by the use of whatever is most salacious, albeit not actually wrongdoing, as the centerpiece.

They never learn. There are always more tapes/video/text.

And if someone advocates beating the living shit out of this predator, it’s just “boxing ring talk”.

Speaker Casada is done if there are any decent Republicans left.
