Discussion: Leahy Will Not Attend 'Politicized' Netanyahu Speech To Congress

Discussion for article #233088

Aaaaah, the backfire continues. Can’t wait for Nettinboohoo to pull out completely, leaving egg all over Boehner’s and the GOP/Teatrolls’ faces. Glorious.

The dominoes begin to fall…Rightly so…Now they want to make it a CLOSED SESSION…Chicken ship gop bags…

Call them to express your loyalty to Americans and America…not the bully zionist terrorist bibi!
Are they Americans or are they panderers to the apartheid causing little zionist and the orangeman.???

1.866.220.0044 or 1.866.338.1015!

The president and vice president will not be there. I will be anxious to see who will set with Boner in the catbird seats.

No Democrats should attend. Every Democrat should gather at the White house for a State Dinner held in honor of the Castro Brothers and the end of the Embargo. Boehner’s slap needs to be met with a groin punch.

bibi should go all clint eastwood… and talk to the chair
i read elsewhere that they intend to fill seats with interns/house employees…

Thank you, Senator Leahy! Please encourage your fellow caucus members to boycott Bibi’s campaign event as well. It’s time to stand with the president and stand up for the office of the presidency. This sort of disrespect should no longer be tolerated. It shouldn’t have been tolerated in the first place!

The fix is in. Bibi’s speech will be a closed session to a joint GOP caucus and selected supporters. Any face the GOP loses from Bibi-ghazi will be more than made up for by 2016 campaign contributors Expect a lot of these exclusive sessions in the chambers as long as Republicans are in control. It’s a lot more convenient, and cheaper than any hotel (no unions) :fu:

That was already a given, he’s addressing AIPAC the same week. They’ll just end up doing it there and he’ll not step foot in house chambers.

He gives perfectly good reasons for not attending. There should be no wavering on the part of the democrats. I hope others will take what he said to heart.

Stand together for once! This speech, if it occurs, sets a horrible precedent and would be a black eye for America and especially, Congress, which is already looking like a bunch of badly beaten pussies who can’t think for themselves or do what’s right for the country.

Thank you, Senator Leahy, for not participating in this political farce and Republican sponsored insult to our President by a foreign leader in the once hallowed halls of Congress.

I suggest progressives call Senator Richard Blumenthal’s office (tel 202 224-2823), and urge him not to attend the speech. Senator Blumenthal is a Democratic Senator from Connecticut who aligns himself with most progressive positions. He also happens to be Jewish. His boycott of Netanyahu’s speech would send a powerful message that Jews also resent this abuse of a Congressional address for partisan political purposes.

47% of Israelis oppose Netanyahu’s plans to insult the President by addressing Congress before the Israeli elections. Only 39% support the planned speech. Tell your Senator and Congress critter that they should stand against the insult to our President. Call Sen. Blumenthal, too.

Netanyahu is too much of a politician to simply cancel, with the concomitant bad press. Look for him to come down with rabies or mononucleosis a week before the speech. Either that or he will provoke Hamas into some action that will necessitate yet another invasion of Gaza, thus preventing him from leaving Israel for the duration. But cancel and be called a wimp? Nunca pasa.

Fair enough. I see it more as damned if he do, damned if he don’t at this point though. He’s already getting alot of bad press for these shenanigans, so it’s really about what kind of bad press he’d prefer…a real pick your poison situation. In that case, you might be right that he’ll just follow through if he can’t find (or manufacture) a good excuse.

I agree that it will be good to see this backfire in Wile E. Coyote fashion, but we mustn’t forget how radical and damaging this attempt to politicize foreign policy is. Even as a failed attempt, it sets an extremely dangerous precedent.

I think it’s clear what kind of bad press he prefers. He got a lot of bad press for his invasions of Gaza and for the massacre of civilians by Israeli commandos on the Turkish relief flotilla in international waters too, but it didn’t make him a bit more contrite.* Netanyahu would rather be seen as a hardass always willing to do the wrong thing without flinching from public opinion or even scorn.

*Okay, Netanyahu finally apologized to Turkey in 2013 for the latter outrage, but only because Obama was sitting next to him listening to the phone call. He’s probably never forgiven Obama for that.

I love how we’re slow-walking this, just like the teabaggers used to do. One Senator a day will announce that they’re boycotting the speech until Netan-yahoo gives up.

Pass the kettle-korn.

On a NUCLEAR issue, no less.

This isn’t about where the Olympics are going to be held.

This is nuclear policy.

Moreover, if there was presently a Military Draft, all of the pot-bellied 20-somethings living with their parents and playing with themselves and the computer would be in an uproar, because a significant impasse on something like this means a possibility of boots on the ground (as opposed to thumbs on the cell-phone).

The great thing here is that The Prince of Orange, not having thought this one out in the least, has succeeded beyond even the somnolent MSM’s ability to call attention to his incompetence.

I’m off of the fence now. Yesterday I started wondering what it would look like if Democrats who attended the speech remained seated while the Republican side stood and applauded while Netanyahu conflates ISIS and Iran.

Actually, I think it’s only 34% of Israelis in support. And yes, I’d really like to see the Jewish Dems step up on this. I’m guessing that more than a few of them may have at least one family member who might make things uncomfortable – in our family it’s my elderly uncle, who just can’t handle any criticism of Israel – but this is really important, for the precedent it would set here and for Israel’s own future (coddling their right-wingers has endangered their survival quite long enough).

I hope any Jews here have already contacted their Dem reps about this; the non-Jewish ones need to know where most of us stand, and it isn’t with Bibi. And if you haven’t yet, call your nearest Israeli consul and voice your outrage about this political stunt; the last thing Israel needs is to become a partisan issue here. (Those calls are reportedly having a real impact back in the home office.) And finally, if you want an effective counterweight to AIPAC, look into J Street – the more support they can show, the greater their influence will be.
