I never thought I’d live through an actual “let them eat cake” moment. When I studied the French Revolution in school, the disconnect between the privileged and the masses at that time seemed so anachronistic that it couldn’t happen in our modern democracy.

I hate to break it to you, Lara, but those 800,000 people going without pay, plus all of the federal contractors who are not getting paid, plus the ripple effects of all that money being sucked out of our nation’s economy, all of that is bigger than your father-in-law’s need for a wall. It is for the future of the country and why the Ds have to stay strong and let the 60/40 split in their favor solidify. It’s not just the hostage taking, but the results to the country that Trump and his supporters want to enshrine in law, symbolism of a border wall to keep out people with darker skin (on the premise that they are a problem), and outright power to enforce their bigotry.
Ds in the House need to start passing symbolic legislation of their own, freeing government workers from any consequences of job actions in response, allowing them to draw money without penalty from their IRAs etc., and allowing individuals (like me) to give money to unpaid government workers instead of sending it to the IRS. Trump and the Rs need to pay a steep price for taking hostages.
