Only about a hundred times “YES”
As someone who actually despises the guy, I can admit that he’s gifted at knowing what sounds will be accessible in pop music. His ears are gifted. Everything else about him sucks, though.
Taylor’s vast fan base can shut this whole thing down. No prob.
Kanye is a pastiche artist. Every style he’s taken on has been derivative of something else. The first album was sort of biting Just Blaze; 808 and Heartbreak was T-Pain; Yeezus was biting Trent Reznor for most of the album. His gift is in making those styles more poppier than they ever were before he put it in his mark on it.
Say what you will about the man, but you’re still talking about a moment from an MTV award show that happened over 5 years ago. He knows how to play the game.
No, I think he’s an extremely talented musician and wordsmith. But this Carson love is dumbfuckery, I admit.
I answered a question someone asked.
It’s not a “say what you will” scenario. It happened. More than once. Almost happened again this year at another awards show. Just because he has talent doesn’t mean he isn’t a self centered man baby completely capable of genius and madness in the same instance. He chose to marry someone just as bloodlusting for fame and notoriety as he is.
I don’t care how talented someone is when their narcissism leads them to become destructive not only of their own lives, but it bleeds over into the fabric of other lives. Want to live like Howard Hughes, go right ahead. But I’m not required to buy it, nor take anything he says seriously. Most certainly not about politics.
Every style is derivative of something else. Nothing is new, everything is borrowed or stolen. What makes it unique is the spin the next person puts on it.
Kanye had long been a well respected producer and artist in his own right before he told the absolute truth about Taylor Swift’s video. That whole hubbub has annoyed me for years. Who cares? He put her annoying ass on the map and since then we’ve been forced to hear about every relationship, every break up, every argument she’s had with a dude. THAT was the real disservice.
PluckyInKY,
I have a lot of trust in you to tell the truth. I’ll have to take your word for it – both for Kanye and for the doctor. I admit that I believe Kanye West is quite talented, but I’m going by what I remember thinking about him years ago when he first came to he nation’s attention (or just before that). Brilliant? I’ll leave that up to you. Ben Carson, M.D.? I’ve never read anything from peer-reviewed journals or papers on the man. I worked in medicine for many years and learned to never take anyone’s word for it–and I truly don’t mean this as a slight to the doctor. The ONLY places I’ve read the man is brilliant is in news reports about him in the context of politics.
I personally can’t stand anything to do with the Kardashians or Kanye West, as I find them to be in the utmost stratosphere of narcissistic attitude and behavior. West’s little tirade on the stage during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech was the cap of it for me. I don’t care that she has “forgiven” him and created music with him. I saw enough. I actually do not follow either of these figures but they are in the news so much–and since I’m a news junkie–I cannot help but to know at least the stupidest shit.
If Kanye West really believes Carson to be brilliant, well that just goes to further what I think about him … and Carson.
President Camacho
He’s a brilliant neurosurgeon because he was the first to separate conjoined twins joined at the head. I supremely dislike Carson and believe him to be a complete moron in all things that don’t involve medicine, but I can feel that way and still acknowledge that, by all accounts, he’s a very gifted surgeon. That’s kind of how I feel about Kanye. He’s a brilliant producer and artist, but he’s a massive asshole. The two just aren’t mutually exclusive.
It’s even moreso with Kanye. I can listen to a track during different eras and within a minute figure out the “inspiration”. Hell, half the time he tells you. I don’t think that makes him any less exceptional. I do think it makes him less groundbreaking than he thinks he is, though.
To be fair, Jesus, Muhammad, and Buddah combined were less groundbreaking than Kanye thinks he is.
“He put her annoying ass on the map”
Right, “her annoying white ass” is what you wanted to say. She’s worth 200 million.
Take your one-way racism someplace else.
Sorry – but I can’t look at him with seeing his wife’s enormous ass. Take that as you will…
Except impregnating blimps…
I’m not arguing Carson isn’t very gifted. I did know about his amazing accomplishment – most definitely gifted. Brilliant? – I’ll need to read up on the man’s work as a whole. But that’s me. Having gone through over a dozen surgeries in my lifetime (15), three of them total reconstruction of the cervical area alone, and having worked from high school through my mid-30s for numerous surgeons and specialists, I am very picky with my words when describing physicians. Ironically, my current neuro-surgeon was trained by my first (who pulled what can only be described as a very unprofessional act), he constantly ignored an issue that I pointed out a lot–it was exceedingly painful and debilitating–that my current surgeon was a little shocked at what he saw (a dozen years after the first procedure) and only pulled back his criticism once he learned who it was who performed the original surgery. After being with the current guy for four years now, I consider him “brilliant,” and consider that first guy–who everyone told me numerous times was brilliant and best that side of the Mississippi River–very good but not brilliant. The man dropped me about two year after the procedure in the middle of a lot of grueling tests (very painful and nauseating as hell) – and never informed me. I show up to clinic one day, waiting for his take on the latest myleograms and MRIs, but he “finished his contract” and wasn’t going to follow me at his private practice." He dropped me at a very frightening time, very painful and awfully angry and scared. Though I never consulted any lawyers, a few of my other physicians (all professors or asst. professors) assured me he should never had done that and that I had grounds for a good lawsuit. I’m not that kind of person. I do believe he did his absolute best but, for whatever reasons, it didn’t come out as he anticipated it might. I knew the risks. That said, the man is a fucking coward and cannot handle bad outcomes. My vibes tell me Kanye and Carson are of similar cloth as the first spine surgeon of whom I speak. I cannot call them “brilliant” feeling that way. Yes, it is somewhat personal, but ALL of our opinions of anything are “somewhat personal.”
I still hold your opinions in very high regard … actually the same high as before.
I rest my case.
You are plucky, aren’t ya? Point taken!
What would be a good example of his musicality and lyrical gifts?
