I expect the President to nominate a moderate (Democrat or Republican) who has been vetted by the Senate and approved by a near-unanimous vote. Let’s see the Senate explain why they should prevent a vote.
Too risky
Ed Whelan is a strong conservative. What’s the opposite of a strong conservative? A weak liberal, of course. Screw this framing. Hardcore conservative, reactionary conservative. Is Sean Hannity a strong conservative?
Yeah, because the only way to play nice with the GOP is to give them everything that they ask for so that they don’t complain as much they feel entitled to.
FFS, fh, I’m not trolling anybody. I’m trying to shame her for saying that she’d sit out the election if Sanders was the nominee. I criticize Sanders supporters for saying that they won’t vote for Clinton if she’s the nominee, as well. Surely you would too, fh? Don’t you think that the next election is very important?
The average voter is not even a reliable voter. I don’t think very many people could name two other justices off the top of their heads. The make up of the Supreme Court will motivate only those who are already guaranteed to show up at the polls on both sides. Americans are mostly ignorant as to their own system of government, and even if they did know, they aren’t mobilized by a Supreme Court vacancy enough to show up in November if they don’t usually participate.

Scalia was a patriot? I strongly disagree. The man had outward, explicit contempt for many of the things going on in this country, and especially social direction. He was not a patriot except in the tortured minds of arch-conservatives.
You really expect Hillary coattails to sweep in a Democratic Senate with a mandate for “progressive change”?
I keep hearing about how Bernie supporters are pie in the sky unrealistic, but that sounds like a rather large slice of that pie. Especially when you consider how Hillary is running on “maintaining the status quo” and has thrown ice water on the idea of sweeping progressive change instead running on an “incremental” approach.
What would be sweet is to see him tank in the primaries for the obstructionism.
Hey I can dream, but I don’t think it’s that far fetched when the runaway Trump has already demonstrated there’s a sizable chunk of the GOP electorate that really doesn’t care about the conservative issues the GOP establishment had thought they had brainwashed them into caring about.
Trump is really mucking things up for them real good.
Today, I am reminded of what was said upon learning of the death of Chief Justice Taney :“The Hon. Roger B. Taney has earned the gratitude of his country by dying at last. Better late than never.”
Or when Joan Crawford kicked the proverbial bucket, Bette Davis was reported to have thought a moment when told, and said: “I was brought up never to say anything bad when someone dies, only good. ____ Joan Crawford is dead. Good.”
That’s close, but not quite what he actually said.
Who ya gonna believe, some lawyers or the Google.
Thanks for the correction.
I think the the likelihood of an assassination attempt on the Democratic nominee increased by a magnitude or more.
Scalia just gets the ball rolling a little early really. Three more will go possibly in the next Presidential term.
Scalia’s replacement is huge of course but the next few will really change the balance of the court.
It could be 7-2 or even 8-1 after 2020.
Get more Democrats registered. Get a lot more Democrats to the polls in November.
Exactly. Sanders supporters: tell me about your “political revolution” with a candidate who barely breaks 35% — among likely Democratic primary voters — nationally.
I like Sanders rather a lot, but I think he has the magical ability to cause his otherwise mentally competent supporters to drop 30 IQ points.
Two of the older justices are liberals, so it’s not likely to go past 6-3. If a Republican is elected in November without Scalia being replaced though, it could potentially be 7-2 conservative.
He would fall in the category of weasel conservative, with my deep apologies to the 4-legged weasels.
