Discussion: Judges Refuses To Block Release Of Anti-Abortion Group's Secret Videos

Discussion for article #239670

Guys that headline is just horrible. Very unclear what it’s trying to say.

judge keeps video been in place

Anybody here think that any ‘pro-lifer’ would refuse life saving treatment from remedies arising from stem-cell research?

Same here.

Unless the video contains some shocking new information that we haven’t heard yet, I doubt the release of this video will make much difference one way or the other. The story’s already out there, if there was a damning new revelation the anti-abortion group would already have leaked it by now.

I look forward to the lawsuits from PP over this matter. These videos have mislead the public and have harmed the organization financially.

I’m sure fox boobs will be happy to air them!

The judge says the company is likely to win its claim of privacy violations, but that doesn’t trump the First Amendment rights of anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress.

So, if the company is likely to succeed in their lawsuit claiming privacy violations (presiding judge feels they will) and the information in those videos was obtained by doing just that–violating privacy–why are they still allowed their “First Amendment Free Speech” on information that was illegally obtained?

Because the presumption is that the First Amendment should be determinative. I know I’m not going to make friends here, but from what I see, this was the right call. In a free society, prior restraint is a bad bad thing and should be deployed sparingly, if at all. The people releasing this tape can make a reasonable argument that it advances the public discourse – and you might disagree, vehemently, but the judges shouldn’t make that call. They should allow it out into the free marketplace of ideas.

After the fact, the publishers can be hit with all sorts of civil or even criminal penalties, but publication is a privileged activity – and, on balance, we are better served as a nation with it so.

“Stem Express then realized its officials also were recorded.”

So it is okay to covertly record Planned Parenthood officials, edit the tape to create a false impression of PP organization engaging in nefarious operations, but when Stem Express’ own officials are recorded they go to court claiming it is an issue of privacy? Please! At least the judge saw through their bs.

It is mind-boggling that no one has really come forward in Planned Parenthood’s defense. Where are the Democrats? MSM? crickets!

If it not for PP providing cancer screenings, pap smears, mammograms, STD testing & treatment, birth control, family planning advice, guidance & education millions of women would probably not be alive today.

Had it not been for the fetal tissue donations used by researchers to discover & develop, for example, vaccinations against polio & measles millions of men & women & children would have met an early death worldwide.

The idea that Planned Parenthood’s fetal tissue research program is somehow illegal is absurd.

On an overwhelmingly bi-partisan vote in 1993, Congress lifted the moratorium Reagan had placed on fetal tissue research in 1988. Therein perhaps the far-right is just using PP as a scapegoat & as a distraction to keep their real goal hidden for now, which, dare I say, is banning fetal tissue research, the consequences notwithstanding.

Defunding/ shutting down PP makes for a good sound byte; it does not make for good policy. It could cost millions of lives.

It is time to step up and fight back. This cannot, must not stand, otherwise, science & medical research would be set back for decades! And humanity would be a lot worse off for it!

Stem isn’t the group that recorded PP it is a research company that was working with PP that also got recorded.

thanks for clearing that up. I appreciate it.

I don’t think anyone is claiming what they are doing is illegal. They are claiming it is immoral and taxpayer dollars shouldn’t fund it.

While I’m personally pro-life, I also realize that not everyone agrees with me and in a country based on the concept of individual liberty, people often do things that we don’t like. Just like I probably do things that others wouldn’t do.

Obamacare covers backbone implants. The Dems and MSM could use this service. Clearly the service has gone unused.

Probably not, but would those who oppose animal research refuse life saving treatment that was developed and tested on animals?

I would also say no.

Awesome. So another doctored and/or misleading bullshit video the right-wing gets to release unchallenged into a public that no longer gives a shit about integrity or critical analysis. Should be interesting to see how many lives Republicans get to ruin over this one.

Except that Bobby Jindal and many others have claimed that these videos show how Planned Parenthood is “profiting from illegal abortions”. Also, thanks to the Hyde Ammendment, there is no federal funding for abortion.

The truth is that the groups who illegally recorded these videos and falsely represented themselves aren’t just anti-abortion, they are anti-Planned Parenthood. They don’t support family planning and contraception.

The first 3 words of your statement are accurate.

The rest is a lie.

WSJ

Antiabortion advocates have said the videos show Planned Parenthood is illegally profiting from fetal tissue

CNN

The anti-abortion group that has accused Planned Parenthood of illegally selling organs and tissue from aborted fetuses released a new video

Orlando Sentinel

Pro-life groups contend that Planned Parenthood sells “aborted baby body parts” for profit.

WSLS, Roanoke VA

> Activists say the videos released by the anti-abortion group “center for medical progress” show that planned parenthood illegally sells fetal tissue for profit.

The Salt Lake Tribune

> The anti-abortion Center for Medical Progress says the tapes show Planned Parenthood illegally sells fetal tissue for profit.

Even obscure media outlets have reported the false claims of illegal sales:

New York Times

> The group behind the tapes accuses Planned Parenthood of selling fetal tissue for profit — which is illegal and which Planned Parenthood denies doing.

abortion kills chilf\dren…no abortion is used for the health care of female patients…by the way were they for the illegal war in iraq which actally killed children or the destrucion and hate of the poor with food stamp cuts, wic cuts, cuts in education etc etc that also kills children just a lot slower

Exactly. They promote budgets and policies that lead to an increase in unwanted pregnancies.

They also promote budgets and policies that reduce availability of health insurance and health care to the children that are born, leading to an increase in suffering and deaths of children. They promote policies that reduce regulation and monitoring of industries and their products, leading to increased incidence of illness and injury in children. They protect the gun industry from liability for selling products with unsafe designs, and even go so far as to prohibit doctors from initiating conversations with parents about keeping children safe from guns in the home, increasing the number of accidental shootings of or by children.

I accept no lectures in morality from these creeps.

I stand corrected, I guess they are claiming it is illegal. However, activist groups often claim illegalities are being done. When there is an actual movement by law enforcement agencies claim crimes may have been committed then it becomes a question of the law.
