Discussion: Judge Throws Out Trump Executive Order That Restored Drilling In Arctic Ocean

The American Petroleum Institute, a defendant in the case, disagreed with the ruling.

“In addition to bringing supplies of affordable energy to consumers for decades to come, developing our abundant offshore resources can provide billions in government revenue, create thousands of jobs and will also strengthen our national security,” it said in a statement.

Affordable energy is here-wind, solar, and geo-thermal.
Billions in government revenue-government’s aren’t businesses
Create thousands of jobs-yes wind, solar, and those pesky fishermen also create jobs
Strengthening our national security at the expense of all human life on this planet.

Did I get everything?

It’s time to drill into Trump’s head and relieve some of the pressure put there by his parents who couldn’t stand being around him and made it known to everyone who would listen?

Penn sent him away to a military academy to learn some discipline just like Fred did but it didn’t take either? The next thing we know Trump will be saying he graduated from West Point at the top of the class that McCain was at the dead bottom…and his ChristoFascist followers will believe it.

I read that mishmash of word salad, and the words themselves tell us he’s no genius. But on Arctic drilling he’s no genius either

In a major legal blow to President Trump’s push to expand offshore oil and gas development, a federal judge ruled that an executive order by Mr. Trump that lifted an Obama-era ban on oil and gas drilling in the Arctic Ocean was unlawful.

I repeat: A MAJOR LEGAL BLOW. To the blowhard.

I disagree. It’s actually pretty cagey by Trump standards – so I actually assume it was Putin’s idea.

Trump’s entire platform is “I’ll stop the browns from invading this country.” The no-information voters he depends upon will find that more convincing when there are more caravans of “invaders” marching toward the US. Any crisis or suffering he can create in “shithole” countries to drive immigration is a win/win for him: hurt the browns, and create facts that appear to support his narrative.

Holy shit:

The potential threat is that methane can escape, which would have serious consequences for global warming. It is a gas that has a much higher potential to impact climate change than carbon dioxide.

So the trick is to extract the gas without any of it slipping out.

Thank god the fossil fuel industry has a near-perfect track record of preventing unwanted contamination by rigorous adherence to aggressive safeguards. Otherwise, we’d be flirting with setting the world on fire just as global warming is really picking up the pace.

Does anyone know if this decision ALSO applies to what he did to the National Monuments out west?
They were designated and protected, and he cut them in little pieces and sold mining & drilling permits …

From NYT reporting,

In December 2017, Mr. Trump cut about two million acres from two national monuments in Utah: the Bears Ears monument, created by Mr. Obama, and the Grand Staircase-Escalante monument, created by Mr. Clinton. At the time it was the largest rollback of federal land protection in the nation’s history.

Already, lawsuits on the issue are making their way through federal courts. Professor Parenteau and others predicted that Judge Gleason’s decision could possibly have a bearing on those cases.

That is because, in the language of both laws, Congress gave the president the right to occasionally designate public lands and waters for protection. However, each of the laws is silent on whether a successor can reduce or revoke those protections.

He truly thinks that he is the King Emperor, and has control over everything and everyone should follow his orders.

The latest idiocy is his edict that the WPo and NY Pulitzer prizes should be withdrawn.

“Had the Fed not mistakenly raised interest rates, especially since there is very little inflation, and had they not done the ridiculously timed quantitative tightening, the 3.0% GDP, & Stock Market, would have both been much higher & World Markets would be in a better place!”

So, you are saying he wants hoards of “brown skinned invaders” coming this way… OK, why not fund M-13 under the table and get them to drive whole populations north??

Welp, I think I know what trump got the wattle under his chin:

Both these guy are good at howling. That I can say.

In fact both these guys make the same exact expression when bellowing:

IIRC, there were allegations that Putin was doing something like that in the run-up to the midterms. Russian agents in South American countries peddling disinformation about American asylum laws, working to create caravans.

I dunno. The show’s not over yet, and things are only likely to get worse for Trump. He knows he’s finished when he leaves office, so I expect we have not seen his most desperate move yet. To say nothing of the powerful and unscrupulous people whose power depends on the support of the unrepresentative GOP. I don’t think DeVos would fund MS-13, or Mulvaney, or even Graham. But Russia, or China, or Saudi Arabia might. I bet MBS likes the backchannel with Kushner by which he illegally purchases American IP. I bet China likes how weak Trump has made us internationally, as does Putin.

I believe this is separate from Nat Monuments out west, since this order is exclusively based on Sec Interior designations of Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act of 1953, which the current Pres at the time (Obama) said hands off. I was trying to find how one executive order “trumps” another, but failed. Perhaps a lawyer could comment?

The Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, created on August 7, 1953, defines the OCS as all submerged lands lying seaward of state coastal waters (3 miles offshore) which are under U.S. jurisdiction. Under the OCSLA, the Secretary of the Interior is responsible for the administration of mineral exploration and development of the OCS. The Act empowers the Secretary to grant leases to the highest qualified responsible bidder on the basis of sealed competitive bids and to formulate regulations as necessary to carry out the provisions of the Act. The Act, as amended, provides guidelines for implementing an OCS oil and gas exploration and development program.
