Discussion: Judge Acquitted Of Dropping Handgun In A Chicago Courthouse

Will County Circuit Judge Edward Burmila ruled Tuesday that it wasn’t clear from the surveillance video that the object that fell from Cook County Judge Joseph Claps’ jacket was a firearm.

You know we can see you, right?

It’s good to be an old white guy. I’m not confident this was the wrong ruling in this case, but the benefit of the doubt this society extends you is certainly not color-blind…

The fix was in as soon as none of the uniformed or nonuniformed people in the area went over and said “Excuse me, sir, was that a gun you just dropped and picked up?”

Obligatory: if he were of a different color and dress pattern he would have been thoroughly perforated, and the shooting would have been considered righteous because no one could tell for sure from the video that the thing he dropped wasn’t a gun.

Yes, despite only recovering his iPhone at the scene.

I’m sure any person, of any station or color, would have received the exact same verdict.

So the judge couldn’t tell what fell from the judge’s pocket, and wouldn’t believe the deputies that work the courthouse?

There are so many people serving 15-year sentence enhancements for possessing a firearm during a crime on far, far less evidence of an actual firearm. Some where a toy gun was recovered in the defendant’s path of flight. This is disgusting (though perhaps the correct outcome, just one that should apply to non-judge defendants).

Two sheriff’s deputies testified that they saw Claps drop and then pick up a gun in the lobby of the Leighton Criminal Court Building on July 3.

So Judge Burmila doesn’t believe that the testimony from Cook County Deputy Sheriffs carries any weight even when the video backs them up? The guy is obviously guilty. No one should be bringing a gun into the court house. And the rules should apply to the judges as well everyone else, -but apparently they don’t.

Time for some Stopping 'n Frisking of old fat white guys.

The creature seen on video had feathers, an orange bill, webbed feet and made what witnesses said is a “quacking sound”, but since deputies didn’t speak with the creature, it wasn’t certain it was a duck.
