Discussion: Jonah Lehrer Gets A Book Deal Despite Having Fabricated Bob Dylan Quotes

Discussion for article #230050

Isn’t there a difference between “making mistakes” and “lying”?

Bob Dylan quotes or Woody Guthrie quotes?

Yes, the mistake in this case was of course getting caught…

Dylan should have sued and donated the settlement to charity.

Benartzi is a professor at UCLA and co-chairman of the Behavioral Decision-Making Group at the university’s Anderson School of Management. He said in a statement issued through Portfolio that while Lehrer had made some “serious mistakes,” he is “truly gifted.”

In this case, the gift is “lying in a pleasing fashion”

“I have spent my life studying how people make mistakes,” Benartzi said. “Everybody makes them, and I have made more than my share. So I am sympathetic toward people who make mistakes.”

I’m glad the School of Management has such a cavalier attitude to mistakes by “gifted” people. Something tells me “workers” don’t deserve the same consideration.

I don’t know what his daddy does, but I suspect that Lehrer was born into the club that none of us will ever be members of.

Fabricating quotes is not a mistake. It is deliberate falsification.

Typing “Bbo Dlyan” would be a mistake. Putting words in Bob’s mouth (or anybody’s mouth) is a high journalistic crime. Jonah Liar should be run out of the business.

To live inside the law, you must be dishonest.
