The big fan base for the Foreskins comes from the southern part of Northern Virginia and the eastern suburbs of DC in Maryland. A huge faction of people who actually live in DC come from other places. And, a large faction of the African American population in DC are Cowboys fans because the Foreskins were the last to integrate. Many Marylanders gladly migrated to the Ravens. So, Snyder knows who he’s playing to–the rubes.
Should have just aired it all. Why are we left wondering what happened?
The team should rename itself the Hogs. Back in the 80’s the fans proudly wore hog costumes, and the name is a good takeoff of pigskin, ie. football.
The irony, of course is that ‘Redskins’ fans are a tribe --they don’t realize this of course, because their neural nets are rather simple, but ‘REDSKIN’ is the name of their tribe, and they react very emotionally, very violently, when one of the symbols of their tribe - the name-- is assaulted, forgetting of course, that the name is a piece of vile white trash talk directed against the indigenous people they stole this continent from.
So when a REAL tribe comes to say, you are calling a football team brand a negative racist term of derision, the fans react by going on the warpath. It would be hilarious, if it was not such insensitive racist shit. Who gives a shit what a professional football team is named? Call them the Washington Assholes, in honor of their fans.
Most of the Wingnuttery racists’ views of Native Americans seem to have come from repeated viewing of John Wayne movies…so they will probably never be able to see any problem. In fact, with a lil’ help in understanding the REAL problem from the FOX trough where they feed, they see the Native Americans and anyone who criticizes them as the real racists!
I’ve never understood the impulse to embrace brands as though they say anything meaningful about us. “Fans” of sports teams are just an extreme example.
The absurdity in my mind is that they attach any value at all to the team or the name. The team has no interest in them, other than in the money the team can wring from them.
The problem in the polling is that is wasn’t nearly so nuanced. My great-great-greats migrated across the midwest and I have a bit of Wyandott. Zero cultural affiliation and I would never mark “Native American” on a poll. But if I’m some “tired of these politically correct librals, why my great-great-great-grandwhatever was an injun and I like the name!” a$$hat, then I’m marking it and there goes your poll. You basically have white people saying they’re cool with appropriating another culture because 150 years ago one of their ancestors did it LITERALLY. It’s tradition, you know.
This is a very smart point. It’s quite common for someone to claim they’re “part Indian (yes, Indian)” and to see them wearing garb or jewelry loosely associated with Native American culture. They will all tell you their great grandmother’s uncle’s half sister’s father’s 3rd cousin was Native American, so they’re so totally a member of Cherokee Nation.
I fixed some typos
The [insert team name] are the phoniest team this side of the Dallas Cowboys (not to say that they aren’t also phonies). The owner has alienated the community and fan base to a degree that I think this “rump faction” must be total idiots. There is no link to [supposed mascot] in the [insert regional] area or early [offensive name] players (like [insert any team], who have a more interesting history). the [insert team name] ticket base is heavily weighted toward trade associations and the like–if you know people in that world, you can always get a ticket. Out of towers like me from actual sports towns have never taken the [insert any team name] seriously and the idea that some group of drunks who probably live in outer suburbia care about the name make me think the team is even more ludicrous. It’s a shame that ludicrously phony cities like [NFL city] already have teams, because my next suggestion would be for the [any team name in the NFL, MLB, NHL, or NBA] to find a city that fits their level of phoniness.
Perhaps, though the tone offered by the activist was one of complete dismissal. I also kind of wonder how you can quantify being Native American, uh, “enough”, to be a valid participant in such a poll…but that’s a minefield.
I guess my point is I actually sincerely doubt there is substantive support for changing the team name among even Native Americans, given the general trend of the polls that are out there and the one attempt at quantifying this being firmly in line with everything else.
This, of course, is no excuse to keep the name, however - but I think little things like this matter.
Thank you.
It’s actually incredibly easy to find out. All one has to do is go to the reservations and ask. There we go, a sample of Native Americans who are all officially members of various tribes. I have no doubt that the first thing on their minds, though, is how the various states are busy trying to take away their rights and sabotage their water and heating supplies.
Is there any reason why the protesters are not demanding that Native American high schools in California who call their teams “Redskins” cease to use the term? Ah yes, because there are many who feel it is a complimentary term. If you read up on the term, there are varying opinions among Native Americans on if it is derogatory or complimentary. That’s why it is a real silly issue. Also, do you really think people would pick a team name because they felt it was derogatory?
Do you see any people complaining about the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame?
How about “Cowboys”?. I’ve heard fellow NYers talk about some asshole Cowboy from Texas. Does that make the term derogatory? Because on the other hand, many Texans are proud to be Cowboys.
And let’s not forget the term Redskins was derived from Warriors in tribes near the DC area who painted their skins red when they went to battle.
There are MANY more issues to be concerned about than the name of a football team, like the ones you mentioned. This name thing is just silly nonsense, but good for ratings I suppose and makes a few lawyers a good buck.
Ah. You are paying no attention whatsoever, yet feel that you should have an opinion on the matter and tell others about it.
So noted.
The day before the election and this is tpms main story. They must know the dems are going to get killed tomorrow. Tomorrow is going to be a wonderful day for a America!!!
MrComments is little more than a troll who never actually addresses the issues being discussed.
Regarding the use of the term “Redskins” at the High School level…how many people are aware of them? I certainly wasn’t!
Or maybe we’re all just sick of politics right now and can’t wait for Wednesday so that we don’t have to watch one more godsbedamned campaign ad!
‘‘We come here to sneer and preen while we whitesplain to you that our racist horseshit isn’t racist at all, and you bring a bunch of THOSE people into the studio?!?! How dare you! Police! POLEEEECE!!’’
It was coyly disingenuous of him. But he does that. Instead of yelling at an opponent, he will play dumb, luring them into hanging themselves with their own tongues.
