The fact that he even suggested it might be a possibility when talking about his contract renewal a few months ago made me think it was almost certain he would leave.

He is leaving on top.

I look forward to his next big contribution.

It would be a grand idea but I doubt it - but who knows?

Including one’s own life. But you don’t have to like it. Still, like Rich_in_NJ said, he’s leaving on top, not just repeating his routine until nobody enjoys it any more, least of all him.
