Discussion: John Hurt, Oscar Nominated For 'The Elephant Man,' Dies At 77

I think McCellan plays Profumo in Scandal. Hurt almost certainly plays the doctor who discovers Kheeler (Joan Whalley) and lets her live in his swank London home, introduces her to the Jet set, including Profumo, and commits suicide in the aftermath of the scandal. The Dresser you may be right, I thought it was Hurt but I saw it in the mid to late 80s. I usually have pretty good cinema, baseball and politics trivia recall. But thanks.

No if it’s the 80’s it was definitely Tom Courtenay, who was a highly idiosyncratic actor not unlike John Hurt. But not quite as idiosyncratic, not quite as high a high wire act. Really, I don’t think there was anyone quite like Hurt. Even when he was in a piece of trash he made something of it.

But if you’ve never seen Courtenay in King and Country, you might want to look it up. He’s heartbreaking. The whole film is actually available on youtube.

IMDB says you are right. I have over my life seen King Rat, Doctor Zhivago, The Night of the Generals (two or three times), and The Dresser. I have wanted to see but never have seen The Day the Fish Came Out of the Water, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, and Billy Liar. Thanks. The only film in which I felt compelled to look up who played his character was Doctor Zhivago. Thanks again. But Hurt did play the doctor in Scandal, and that was the first time I noticed him, not having seen Alien.

Oh he’s definitely in Scandal. He’s brilliant in Scandal.

But I think I first saw him either as Caligula or as Quentin Crisp. Can’t recall which.
