Discussion: Joe Scarborough: Shooters In Mass Killings Shouldn't Be Named

Discussion for article #241393

You mean as long as the shooter is a white guy. I never heard him say the same thing about the shooter who killed the two news reporters in Virginia

We should probably ignore them entirely. Don’t even report on any shootings at all. Maybe even make it illegal unless the NRA first approves a story.

Yeah. That will do the trick. If the MSM “just stops giving them publicity” that will stop irrational, delusional, and insane people from killing other people.
Sometimes the hubris of the MSM is just breathtaking.

Fucking idiotic. This is so fucking warped and such a huge attempt at deflection.

Shall we stop giving the mass shootings themselves any attention because, well, all that publicity for the incident itself is just giving the perp what he wanted? And let’s never mention the victims, because that’s just holding up his scorecard?

This is all about “sweep it under the rug”, wrapped in a rationalization that’s designed to make us feel like the petty refusal to say the shooter’s name is doing something to prevent the next one by “de-incentivizing” it…you know, so we can sleep at night as WE ACTUALLY DO NOTHING REAL.

This is lip service, window dressing, beating off into a sock. Don’t talk about it. Don’t talk about the person who did it. Don’t talk about his mental illness. Don’t talk about what we could do to stop it. Don’t talk about the victims. Don’t talk about what it says about our society. Don’t talk about the loopholes and problems in the law that facilitate this. Deny it happened. Wish it away. Pretend it’s normal. Don’t talk don’t talk don’t talk just accept accept accept it as a routine, unpreventable and inevitable part of life.

FUCK. THAT.

This is a Bullshit Controversy…

The guy did something dreadful.

He has a name.

It is is illogical to think that his dreadful act will not be associated with his name.

The logical extension of this argument is that we, as a society, do not give any publicity to these mass killings at all. This amounts to pretending that the killings never happened.

This is almost as bad as pretending that it will never happen again.

Finally!!! An idea that will put an end to America’s gun violence problem. Stop looking at it. We’re already banning the federal government from studying. But this idea - to not talk about things, well that just takes it to the logical next level. Bravo.

This raises the question if a gunman fires his not-assault weapon in a grade school and no one talks about it, did it even happen?

Fucking brilliant thinking from the former GOP member of Congress, who’s name shall remain unsaid.

I can see some logic to his stated position. However, what I think he’s REALLY saying is, just shut up about mass shootings altogether. Hear no evil, see no evil. If we just don’t talk about them, they’re not happening. And the merchants of death can continue to briskly ply their trade.

This cry to not name the victim is something I’ve seen from a slew of right-wing gun defenders, seems it’s just another way for them to deflect. Instead of accepting they’re largely at fault for the deaths from the latest gun nut slaying, they want to change the subject and make it the media’s fault (ironic isn’t Joe?) that one of their tribe killed a bunch of innocent people.

By that same logic, we should not naming mass murderers in general. We ought to refer to Stalin as “That Georgian-Soviet guy with the big mustache who launched purges and had lots of Russians killed.”

Both Stalin and the shooter are dead; self-esteem and notoriety are the least of their problems.

And also, I refuse to use Joe Scabrous’ real name because it would give him the attention he craves.

So we aren’t supposed to face reality?

Only after it’s been rewritten.

But Jo-Jo…if we refuse to name them, won’t you WhinyCons claim that the shootings are fake since we can’t produce the shooter’s name or background?

The kid who did this is dead. I guess Joe forgot that point. I mean it’s not like he (the shooter) gets to revel in his new found fame.
