Oh, for fuck’s sake…This is the point where I state, “I got shit to do”. Heading out to several appointments now. When I return I want to see all this stupidity cleaned up and fixed. Too much to ask? I thought so.
By the time I come back, I more expect ‘the world according to tRump’ to be more fucked up than when I left. Unfortunately, it’s our life now.
All of the services that had this problem make use of OpenStreetMap (OSM) for data.
OSM is like the wikipedia of maps, everyone can edit it, so some dead-end deplorable changed it and it got past the folks who monitor OSM changes for vandalism.
In addition to the awful racial slur, it damages the whole cause of free and open geospatial data, which is critical to a lot of projects around the world.
I see the OSM community is reacting strongly and working to figure out how to avoid these things in the future.
I personally think things like this will happen again as there is just no end to the scum with too much time on their hands and a desire to be awful humans. None of it outweighs the incredible benefit OSM has around the world, but it is disgusting to see none the less.
Google maps renames the Senate Office building after McCain.
If it was Jewtropolis how do you explain the decline in the number of Jewish delis in the region?
LONG Island IS JEwtropolis
“Snap Map relies on third party mapping data…”
Was the name of New York City something so in doubt that they had to go to a third party for it?
OSM, Wikipedia, name a publicly-sourced information service and it will be manipulated by people who have a monetary or personal incentive.
The OpenStreetMap Foundation has replied to this:

I’m sure the person that vandalized the software did not really mean “Jewtropolis” in a bad way, that a lot of people refer to NY as such and that everyone just wants something to be outraged about.
(in case its not clear; yes, this is snark)
You’re very articulate…
Three words to describe a big problem for our country: lack of accountability.
“Part of the “Open” of OpenStreetMap, is being openly editable. It is a wiki-style, crowd sourced, collaboration in which users all around the world can contribute and make edits.”
Works great until the crowd turns out to be racist!
