Discussion: Jeff Merkley Becomes First Senator To Endorse Bernie Sanders For President

I don’t know that his war chest is all that huge. He’s raised a lot of money, but he’s spending it as quickly as he raises it. By the end of last month he had about $17 million in the bank and he’s campaigning like a madman in a very large, do or die state right now. My guess is he’s spending everything he’s got now knowing there’s no tomorrow if he doesn’t win next Tuesday.

Oh no, Sanders has standards!

Sorry, but Merkley is anything but a jerk. Your comment says more about you than him.

While I am supporting Clinton, I do not begrudge my Jr. Senator for endorsing Sanders though I disagee with his choice.

Sen. Merkley is not the enemy and is an outstanding Senstor.

Shame on you.

The term I used was “jerkley,” not “jerk.”

Question:

If Senator Sanders can’t even manage to find and release his own tax returns after weeks of being asked, how does he expect to manage the United States of America, something a tad more complicated?.

I just read the endorsement and it sounds like he thinks the economy, inequality, and lack of fairness (and the rigged rules to use an overused expression) are the most important issues for our country.

I tend to agree w/ him that if we don’t address this, and in the next few years, our country is screwed and all of the other issues aren’t going to matter that much. People can’t go on living like this. (and I know that most TPM readers are probably not the struggling working class/middle class, so their economic situation may not be drastically different than it was 8-15 years ago).

Now I’m sure I’ll get a slew of bitchy condescending comments…bring em on.

She has already endorsed Clinton. And has been receiving hate mail and condemnation from many unhinged Sanders partisans for it.

His $-to-vote ratio is off the charts. It takes him $10 million to pick up 12 thousand votes on average.

The tax returns got lost in the pile of papers under the transcripts from Hillary’s Goldman-Sachs speech.

And that is at all exculpatory how?

All good points. Getting to the next level of fairness is the elephant in the room. Ideas ans plans, based on experiential knowledge of what does and doesn’t work is what is missing in Bernie’s curriculum vitae. Getting there is the hard part and without a plan people aren’t going to follow a guy who hasn’t done his homework.

Bernie has done jack to help any downballot Democrats and has been tellingly ambivalent about doing so when asked. Whatever Merkley’s motives, money isn’t one of htem.

I doubt Sanders has raised much less spent over 50 trillion dollars. You might want to check your math and your hyperbole.

But I would not be shocked that Sanders burn rate is much higher than Clinton’s.

It’s mid-April. Hillary has 2/3 of the delegates she needs to be nominated. And he’s the first senator to endorse Bernie. 'Nuff said.

A single endorsement from a Democratic senator. Yaaay, Bernie ! We just need the Sanders folks to explain why this single endorsement of Sanders by a Democratic senator is much more important than the 40 such endorsements received by HRC

@lestatdelc Thank you for that. I didn’t know. Honestly, I’m surprised she would do that from a political standpoint. From a standpoint of personal integrity, I think it was somewhat courageous of her.

If someone has not heard or read about Bernie Sanders by now - especially if they are in a position to make a noteworthy endorsement - well it seems a little improbable. Is this sort of like the meme that the Sanders people put about the fact that Sanders lost some states because people were not familiar with him.

His burn rate is ridiculous. He’s outspent Hillary probably everywhere, sometimes by 2-to-1 or more.

But yes, the $10M/12K votes is… lets say facetious. (edit: I should be clearer, that burn rate is flat out wrong, I have no idea where lockheed got it from came from)

Yes, it´s a scandal! An outrage! Someone better tell the American people STAT!

Just make damn sure if Hillary wins the nomination to endorse her and encourage bernie votes to vote for her too. God damn the anti Hillary comments from Bernie voters on the Huffington post are ridiculous and rival Trump and Cruz anti-democratic followers.
