I’m beginning to understand what made them work as a couple. Too bad it was the same thing that made them not work as a couple and all, but still, you can see what they saw in each other—the superficiality, the yawning emptiness they both shared—it must have been so exciting in those early days. I have a brother-in-law, a Mexican immigrant and a very successful trial attorney, who retired after winning a huge jury verdict in a civil case. People used to say dumb shit to him all the time along these lines.

Once when someone he just met was railing against the “Vietnamese” immigrants who were “taking over southern CA” he just laughed and said “Really”? Sensing his mock incredulousness, the person exclaimed “They’re taking your peoples’ jobs”!
