Discussion for article #228237
IS is trying to take Kurdish land in Syria so Turkey tolerates them. They will do nothing to actually diminish IS’s abilities.
Dearest Turkey,
Engage, or you’re expelled.
Sincerely,
NATO
Bingo. Let the folks in that region take care of this-shouldn’t be our job. Sick of our leaders thinking it is.
It keeps Turkey’s Kurdish separatists pre-occupied.
The Kurds are spread across Syria, Turkey, Iraq and Iran and probably elsewhere. Keeping the Kurds from getting their own country (carved out of Syria, Turkey, Iraq and Iran?) figures into eveybody’s thinking in the Middle East Game of Thrones.
Yup, beat me to it. The reason Turkey won’t engage them is that they are in a secret alliance - as long as they attack Kurds and not Turks, they’re more than happy to turn a blind eye to their activities, and even support them when no one is looking. Also, if Turkey is attacked, technically that would provoke a NATO response . . .
