Discussion for article #234428
Tunisia is a complex subject. It gave birth to the Arab Spring, and in many ways had the best preconditions in place for a smooth transition to a relatively democratic system. It has a relatively low birthrate, high levels of education and better treatment of women than in many countries. In addition to religious extremists, however, there are the disenfranchised from the Ben Ali times and a lot of people in doubt about what a secularist agenda is supposed to bring. Tunisia needs to look to its right and left and see that it is on path, but its institutions and infrastructure aren’t quite there yet.
Today’s attack was on European tourists to the museum, so the intent of this act seems to be to discourage tourism and hurt a major generator of GDP.
