Discussion: In Wake Of Deadly Crash, Engineers Must Get Sleep Apnea Treated Before Operating NJ Transit Trains

Engineers suffering from sleep apnea must have the fatigue-inducing
disorder under control before they will be allowed to operate trains

Previously they were allowed the operate a train with sleep apnea?

Can I say What The Fuck?

Yes, but it had to be undergoing treatment. Approx 10% of metro-north engineers have it, and close to that % in the general public in varying degrees. So they can’t just not allow people with the condition, but it is wise to verify treatment by getting documents, and to monitor the engineers on video to see if there are problems with a specific operator.

There are plenty of airline pilots and truck drivers with it too. Again, they have to be undergoing treatment, definitely need serious oversight on this.
