Discussion: In Response To Orlando, Dem Senator Launches Talking Filibuster Over Guns

The second amendment says people can have guns for arming a militia. That’s because folks brought their own gun to war in those days. I have an ancestor who went to the Washington Territory in the 1850s. The homesteaders had to live in a fort with everyone else for 2 yrs, til they got a treaty with the First Nation
people who didn’t welcome the intruders. The men guarded the fort and the crops. They were sworn in, and they brought their own guns. There are are records of this in the national archives. Nobody brings their own gun for any local, state or federal militia today, except maybe the crazy loons in the Oregon bird sanctuary standoff with their self appointed militia. Today, weapons are issued to military and law enforcement. These are different times. The second amendment is out of date, and misinterpreted, IMO.

Damn. You know what, I actually forgot that Hillary wasn’t still a Senator.

It’s been a rough month at work. I’ll show myself out.

Good luck with the filibuster but I don’t hold out hope anything will change.
There’s a sad irony here … The Senate brought to a halt with a filibuster…after 7+ years of doing next to nothing due to obstruction from our favorite terrapin.

All you need to know is there have been 6050 gun deaths so far this year , 50 since Orlando. That’s about 30 a day . We have a mass murder every fucking day in this country it’s just spread out . That’s 30 lives a day and all those around them impacted by gun violence

Let’s see here now…
What we have here is a “mess” of “Public Servants”
All of whom have $174,000 a year “Guv’ment” jobz
Who meet in a secured place
Backed up if need be by the entire weight of the US Military if someone so much as sneezes the wrong way.
Why do I think that these people REALLY don’t get it? What might lead me to think and feel that they can talk all they want, but they are disconnected from the reality of the layered problems behind Orlando, and Sandy Hook, and so many other places.
Let’s see them do this IN PUBLIC somewhere, where more than 1000 or so “viewers” can hear them,.
These people are no closer to the problems of America than the Moon is to Gary, Indiana.
Talking is as easy as getting a gun in America
Thanks to men like these, weapons which fire tens of rounds of ammunition every second,STILL wind up in the hands of people who hate and kill.
So this is an exercise in futility.
Until and unless the American people break the power of the NRA.
Welcome to political reality.
Now, talk.
That’s all these people will ever do.

I could not agree with you more. That’s why this election is so important - i.e., the Supreme Court.

Glad to see this filibuster. This is what voters have been waiting to see. Democrats taking action to show the Republican obstruction of much needed legislation. It will go a long way to convincing everyone in November that the GOP is corrupt and doesn’t care about solving problems.

I love Neil Young but he’s wrong. Anyway, progress is measured in inches sometimes. Obviously, Chief Justice Roberts needs to go to a Trump rally since he thinks the VRA isn’t needed anymore.

And yet a “racial minority” is now completing one of the best two terms as President of the United States in the nation’s history, so while you say has some weight, it is not dispositive. Progress has been made with setback along the way and progress will continue as long as we the people keep pushing for it.

I recognize McConnell but who’s the guy on the right?

I’d rather have the Dems pissing in the wind against the NRA than just standing there with their dicks in their hands - metaphorically speaking, of course, since I do not want to slight any Dem women who are also fighting against those fucking bloodsuckers at the NRA.

They’re doing a very good job with substance!

I’m now going to call my senator to tell his office that I am listening and supporting this filibuster. Casey needs to get his pro-life ass to the senate floor and do something!

Ya I saw it Ok let’s hear that argument again about these guns being for"sport"
If your sport is killing people , I guess

They are basically filibustering the standing filibuster on gun legislation by the Repubs.

They have blocked, barricaded and barred the door for too many years. Even some of the true nuts at faux are seeing the light.

It’s time-right now-to talk about the gun death epidemic and sensible legislation and control. Right now!

Said the NRA stooge/troll.

“Ohio”

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We’re finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

It’s about frickin’ time. The good news is that it feels like there is finally a big enough attitude shift in the country to get this or some better legislation after Hillary gets elected.

Thanks to “dual-tracking”, filibusters don’t really hold up the Senate anymore…which was what really made them powerful.
