Hold on now, they can meet about this but impeachment charges cannot be referred to the Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice by anybody but the Speaker of the Alabama House, and he just lost his job because he was convicted of ethics charges.
And once they get a replacement for that criminal, it is likely there won’t be a Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court because that would be Judge Roy Moore, who is facing Federal charges due to his directive issued to all state judicial officers ordering them to NOT allow any gay marriages in the state of Alabama.
So it’s quite possible that Bentley’s term of office will expire before somebody can be found to refer the impeachment charges and there is a Chief Justice to actually hear the case!
Moreover, they can subpoena witnesses but can’t compel them to testify.
