Discussion: House GOP Coalition Bucking Trump On Shutdown Grows To 12, Inc. Last NRCC Chair

Here’s a way to really mess with Republican heads and to provide a pivot to a way out of this deadlock, as well. In 2006, a strongly bipartisan Senate majority passed an Immigration Reform bill that, among other things, included authorization for “border fencing” and a “pathway to citizenship for (what we now call) Dreamers”. Despite President Bush’s strong support for the bill, the Republican House refused to even take it up. Pelosi’s House should now remedy that and take it up, and send it to the Senate, telling Trump that this is her counter offer. Some Democrats may fume over this, but it would be a strong signal and would place both Trump and McConnell in a tough spot. Moreover - and much more important - it would get a tangible victory for these Hispanic young people. If Trump just declates a National Emergency, without the Democrats having put a tangible offer on the table, the Democrats – and these deserving young people - will get nothing. Nothing except court cases, which won’t help.

Whatever happens, Trump cannot leave this mess thinking anything positive about shutting down the government, or he’ll do it every week. Remember: he’s three years old.

Nothing like the results of the last election to focus one’s mind on the next one.

Has anyone (smart) even mentioned how long it would even take to build said wall if Donnie goes the “emergency” route? I’ll bet he’ll be out of office before the first shovel hits the ground. I also recall something that whether steel or concrete, the vast majority of wall building material would have to come from Mexico, becuase there wouldn’t be enough available in the states??

Moron’s in for a world of hurt from Texans along the Rio Grande whose homes would appropriated for a wall, a barrier, a beaded curtain, whatever. It could take a decade for courts to make a judgment before handing private property over. .

The GOP is filthy-dirty and knee-deep in Trump’s muck.

Won’t happen, Trump and the Republicans have already said any kind of amnesty program won’t be allowed. They are demanding the $5.8 billion with no conditions, no negotiations, and until they get it they intend to keep the government shut down. The Democrats don’t want to give up the wall funding without some kind of deal, and rightly so…they definitely do not want to cause the pain to government workers but really have no choice but to stand up to Trump and the Republicans on this.

This is just how he wants it, and the slime ball is quite experienced and adept at keeping out of sight. He will probably need to be forcibly dragged out of his shell by some vise grip-like instrument (or event).

At some point it does. At the moment McConnell can say “What’s the point? Won’t pass”, but if enough republicans start crossing the aisle, then the obstructor is him, and he most likely pass the pressure to Trump.

Is Trump really denying he ever said Mexico will pay for the wall? Didn’t the “it” in “and Mexico will pay for it” refer to “the wall,” the 10,000 times he said it?

Yes, he’s saying most recently they’d pay not with a check but through deals with Naft2

Mexico is paying for the Wall through the new USMCA Trade Deal. Much of the Wall has already been fully renovated or built. We have done a lot of work. $5.6 Billion Dollars that House has approved is very little in comparison to the benefits of National Security. Quick payback!

Well yes but what are the chances? He will just move on to the next created crisis.

A little self promotion never hurts.

Maybe Dems particularly NDP see themselves as serious legislators and don’t need a mic in their faces and answering questions shouted at them in hallways.

The NAFTA math is crazy. If he means tariffs or taxes on (debatable claims of) more robust trade, then we are paying for the wall.

Nah.

These are the cracks and we need more. And with the possibility of taking disaster funds from hard hit states in the south, Puerto Rico, and CA those cracks could widen.

Well of course if Stephen Miller whose idea this is had written a proper proposal, with all the pertinent facts checked, and submitted to the Pres. for his perusal…oh damn the man can’t read.

A project this big, with having to figure out where to put the damn thing, and acquire all the property need to erect this folly, I’d be surprised if Trump wasn’t gone and dead by the time the first bulldozer bulldozed.

We’ve become accustomed to too many Rs spewing talking points in the manner that it’s become normal. It’s not.
