I hope the House finds a way to hold his salary until he shows up. They do have the power of the purse. Let’s see this newly minted trumpian flack work for free, why don’t we?
There isn’t much value to Barr except for two things:
Sending a message about subpoena enforcement
Leveraging subpoeanas, contempt votes and threats of impeachment to get him to cough up everything else that’s remaining from the Mueller Report (redacted areas, source interviews etc).
The likely political result of this stand off is that Barr will give the Dems nothing, which will force the Dems to grasp the reality that they need to open a formal impeachment inquiry if they want to investigate Trump. The alternative is capitulation, which is something that Pelosi and Hoyer are not opposed to, but I think they both know it would damage the Dems’ brand and level of enthusiasm. You’re not getting legislation passed in this Congress. The value you provide to the voters will be in terms of accountability. Pelosi will grasp that soon enough.
Her goal right now is to make things as easy as possible for the 2020 nominee and Senate candidates to win. You do that by passing legislation that all Dems support and you beat the s**t out of the sitting POTUS so that his negatives stay high and he has too many things to deal with that it allows your candidate to avoid being targeted as effectively.
The best way to do that is through a formal impeachment inquiry because that is the only option Trump is forcing. You can’t defeat Trump without credible threats that you can use.
The GOP believes it is on the cusp of the end of democracy, that very soon Trump-Republicans will be the only people whose opinions will matter, because nobody else will have any power. And they’re damn-near right: they’ve already seized the Judiciary and the Executive, and holding the Senate makes those branches immune from the law. If the House were 100% “Angry Democrats,” it wouldn’t matter.
Barr looks corrupt and venal because he is corrupt and venal, and he believes there’s nothing anyone can do about it. He is ready to shoot someone on 5th Avenue for Donald Trump.
My tinfoil hat says that Barr wants the impeachment hearing rhetoric to be about Barr and not PP.
My head tells me that Chairperson Nadler 's motion to provide equal time for questioning is an opportunity to allow Republicans on the committee to express their opinions on the record. Like stripping bark off a tree.
That empty chair scenario has been used too many times to the derision of the minions who would then laugh themselves sillier.
It wouldn’t be nearly as effective as we imagine.
However - a frog march of his butt into a local jail cell with a clear chyron of the penalty of ignoring a Congressional subpoena might go a whole lot farther.
But aren’t there a whole bunch of other hearings that could take place without opening an impeachment inquiry? I’m thinking specifically of anyone from the SCO, in particular Mueller. Also, what about the state level inquiries, a la SDNY? Should those all be surfacing soon?
