Discussion: House Committee Votes To Require Women To Register For Draft

This hasn’t meant much so far for young men. I’m not sure if young men even register any more. However, if you support all of the other access to military positions that woman have asked for, why wouldn’t you support this?

Introducing a bill that you don’t support to drum up opposition to that bill. Does this happen often in congress, or is it a new affectation of the wingers reps?

And would these House Committee Members volunteer to go onto the Draft for 6 months ?

It sounds like he introduced it as a way to make a point about the Pentagon’s new rules on women in combat. I think what he was expecting was for people to push back against women registering for the draft and then use that as ammunition to argue against the Pentagon’s changes allowing women to take on more roles in the military. Unfortunately for him from the article it looks like that backfired on him and the women on the committee, instead of objecting, said “that’s fair” and signed onto the idea.

So it basically bit him in the ass? I’m good with that

Why wouldn’t they? There as been no draft in 43 years, and it’s exceptionally unlikely that there ever will be again. All that this is about is registering for Selective Services.

Typical Republican…to introduce a bill you are really against because you think it will turn off enough people to the fundamental concept of equality…and then in another typical Republican formulation…it turns out it backfires and bites you in the ass.

I’m with Jackie Speier. Go for it. Let’s make this thing a reality. Registration for a potential draft is not the same thing as an actual draft anyway. It just puts everyone on an equal playing field. Sounds good to me.

Well they are required to by law, and there are some non-trivial limitations for men who have not registered and who don’t wish to lie on forms:

Women absolutely should be required to register, as should transgendered people (currently transgender men are exempt from registering).
